I The Silver Question now being widely advocated after a long period in which it dropped from sight, is certainly not a principle to be adopted blindly. But it does seem worthy of intelligent analysis. Writing in The Mining Journal, J. I). Fisher, an engineer of Colorado, advocates a silver and gold ratio of 20 to 1, and says that no other single corrective step could be taken which could be as universally beneficial. If it were established, he believes, international obligations could he paid, credits would be restored, and unemployment problems would solve themselves. It is generally agreed that the depressed price of silver has been a vital factor in prolonging and intensifying, on an international scale, the general industrial depression. The purchasing power of whole peoples has been reduced to half or less of its former level trade between nations is languishing and dying. If the rehabilitation of silver will help bring order out of chaos, the subject should have the most thorough consideration to determine its practicability. Metal mining means so much to many of our states and especially to Utah, that legitimate and practical encouragement of it affects the very stability of our nation. Farm Records By C. O. Stott. Extension Economist Right now is the opportune lime to begin keeping farm a Farm record keeping need not be on an elaborate scale. In fact a simple system of accounts for the general farm accurately kept and consistently followed throughout the year, and over a period of years, is far more preferable to attempting a detailed cost study on the single enterprise basis, such as a system of cost accounts on the sugar beet enterprise, or on wheat production, or apples, or dairying, or what not. Farm record keeping need consist only of four major items: 1. Opening and closing inventories. 2. Record of expenses. 3. Record of receipts. 4. Summarization and analysis. That sounds simple and it Is just as easy as it sounds, if the proper kind of account book is used and the habit of account keeping is once established. The word inventory is baffling to some people; it sound hard, but with usage it will become common and easily understood. Inventory means a list or a record of things with valuations." So that at the beginning of the year, one who Is starting a farm account for the first time should make a list of all lands, buildings, machinery, materials, livestock, equipment, crops, supplies, etc., that he owns and that are actually on hand, and place a cash valuation on them. Average market or sale values are usually used. Yes, I will agree with what the reader is thinking right now, that is quite a Job, and it will require several hours time. However, time can easily be spared for such a purpose during the winter months to begin the account. If you use the farm account book which has been published by the Utah State Agricultural college within the year, you will find itl for listing! conveniently arranged all inventories with complete in-- 1 structions on where and how to list items and suggestions on arriving at valuations. Supposing you have secured one of these books either from your county agent or directly from the Agricultural college at Logan and you have listed your opening inventories, your next move will be to record expenses as they are incurred and all receipts as they come in. The book contains ample space with proper heads for all Reduces COLDS 66 and relieves SORE THROAT Now, science has studied ordinary people leading normal lives and has proved that those gargling with Listerine twice a day had 66 fewer colds than those who did not use it. This is because full strength Listerine kills the common cold -- germs almost instantly I And consequently, when germs have made your throat sore, you can kill the germs and relieve your throat by gargling Listerine.
