Never in the history of the great majority of the present generation, has a disease visited the country that has taken such a terrible toll as the present epidemic of Spanish Influenza. The state of Illinois has lost over of Its inhabitants and In the army training camps more soldier boys lost their lives from the flu than were killed in France while fighting the Hun. In our own community we nevei have had a contagion that has exacted such a heavy toll and yet despite all these terrible' evidences, too many people treat the presence of the malady In the community altogether t o lightly. The regulations preset-b- e by the Board of Health are not lived up to as they should he and the result is we stib have the flu and good people are still losing their lives. Just the other day a yofmg man was seen riding down Main street seated in the front seat of a big automobile between two young ladies and yet that young man had arisen from his sick bed not more than three days before. The regulations prescribe that every flu patient remain at home for ten days after recovering from the disease There are other people who have just recovered from the flu, who insist upon getting right up close to another individual when engaged in conversation and that, too, without the protection of a mask. The promiscuous running at large by members of the family where the disease exists is also prohibited but the regulation is not always respected. Until we all come to regard this pestilence as a real menace to our very selves, It Is doubtful whether or not 22,-00- . T'H III 0 it can be stamped out of the community. In this matter every individual must remember two things to protect himself and not to expose his fellows. We must all be our brothers keepers and cooperate to the last degree or we will not succeed in getting rid of the disease. The doctors dis- some in agree, cities, as to the proper measures to adopt. That has nothing to do with our own case. We have a Board of Health that Is a unit with the city officials and together they have decided upon a course of action. We must all support that course and personally we feel confident that our the proper officers have adopted course. Let us, then, without becoming hysterical or unduly alarmed, religiously accept every requirement and live up to them no matterhov' much personal inconvenience we may be put to. A little inconvenience Is a mighty small price to pay for life and Renovate Brushes. When sweeper brush bristles become soft from long use and do not sweep up lint as well as when stiff, put a little common baking soda In some hot water; take the brush out of the sweeper and dip it up' and down in this. Let it dry in the sun and It will be like new. Hair brushes or any brush can be treated in the same way with the best of results. Love Apples. Millions of people liberated from the Prussian yoke are now depending upon us for the food which will keep them from starvation. With food the United States made it possible for the forces of democracy to hold out to victory. To insure democracy In the world, we must continue to live simply In order that we may supply these liberated nations of Europe with food. Hunger among a breeds anarchy people Inevitably American fcod must complete the work of making the world safe for democracy. Last year we sent IT, 820, OIK) tons of food to Europe. For the present year, with only the European Allies to feed, we bad originally pledged oursehes to a program that would have increased our exports to 1.7,500,000 tons. Now, to feed the liberated nations, we will have to export a total of not less than 20.000.- 000 toas practically the limit of loading capacity at our ports. Reviewing the world food situation, we find that some foods will be obtainable In quantities sufficient to meet all world ueeds under a regime of economical consumption. On the other hand, there will be marked world shortages In some important commodities. Return to Normal Bread Loaf. With the enlarged wheat crops which American fanners have grown, and the supplies of Australia, the Argentine and other markets now accessible to shipping, there are bread grains enough to enable the nations to return to their normal wheat loaf, provided we continue to mill flour at a high percentage of extraction and maintain economy in eating and the avoidance of waste. In fats there will be a heavy shortIn age about 3,000,000,000 pounds pork products, dairy products and vegetable oils. While there will be a shortage of about three million tons In ric)t protein feeds for duiry animals, there will be sufficient supplies of other feedstuffs to allow economical consumption. la the matter of beef, the world's supplies are limited to the capacity of the available refrigerating ships. The supplies of beef In Australia, the Argentine and the United Spates are sufficient to load these ships. There will be s shortage In the importing countries, bu ve ctmn t hope to expand exports materially tr the next mouths in view of the bottle neck in transportation. We will have a sufficient supply of sugar to allow normal consumption In this country If the other nations retain their present short rations or Increase them only slightly. For the countries of Europe, however, to their present rations to a nia teital extent will necessitate our sharing a part of. our own. supplies with them. Twenty Million Tons of Food, Of the world total, No-t- h America will furnish more than rtO per cent. The United States, Including the W'esi cal'ed upon to furnish Indies, will 20.000.- 0 K) tons of mod of all kinds as compared with our pre-wa- r exports of about 0,000.000 tons. While we will be able to change our program In many respects, even a casual survey of the world supplies in comparison to world demands shows conclusively that Europe will know famine unless the American people bring their home consumption down to the barest minimum that will maintain health and strength. There are conditions of famine in Euroixv that will be beyond our power to remedy. There are 40,iKK).000 peo pie in .forth Russia whom there 4s small of reaching with food tlds w.n r. Their transportation is demoiallKi In complete anarchy, and shortly many of their torts will be frozen, even if Internal transport could be realized. To Preserve Civilization. At this moment Germany fins not alone tucked the food and animals from all those masses of people she has dominated and left starving, but aha has left behind her a total wreck ace of social Institutions, and this mass Kit people is now confronted with absolute anarchy. If me value our own safety and the dal organization of the world, If we value the preservation of civilization lieelf, we cannot permit growth of this cancer In the world's vitals. Famine is the mother of anarchy. From the Inability of governments to secure food for their people grows revolution and chaos. From an ability to supply their people grow stability of gov eminent and the defeat of anarchy.
