This measure makes it a misdemeanor to operate any picture show, theatre, vaudeville show, ball game, horse race, cock fight, bathing resort and many similar sports on the Sabbath Day and those who Indulge in those things are liable to a fine or imprisonment. The purpose of the bill is to have a more proper observance of the day which the Creator has said should be a day of rest and worship. . This measure does not affect Brigham, except in one way. We have no Sunday theatres, baseball or similar pastimes, but it is possible under the present law lor our young people to go down to the Hot Springs, to Ogden or Salt Lake and there they can Indulge in any or all of the things menOur tioned in the bill, practically. close proximity to the Hot Springs and Ogden, makes those two points particularly attractive to young people who have an Inclination to spend the Sabbath In carousing and for that reason we think the bill ought to pass. It Is true people will not be legislated into heaven but at the same time it might be possible to legislate them out of hell and if that can be done then the law should be made as broad and sweeping as possible. We believe it can be accomplished and are heartily in favor of the measure. During the week petitions have or will be circulated among the people of this city. They ought to be signed by every father and mother in the community and by the young people themselves, for if the measure becomes a law, much temptation will be removed from their pathway. A community like Brigham City and in fact the entire valley, ought to be noted for its blooded cattle, matchless dairy products and unexcelled fruits. They go together they belong in the same class and by working them together, the horticulturist adds years to his life of pleasure as well as fattens his bank roll. In Missouri and the other corn states, the hog is termed the mortgage lifter. In this section the dairy cow is the queen and the means of paying off the debts on the farm. Facts are facts, brothers, and figures dont lie. This matter has been figured out by experts and their deductions can be relied upon. But only he who does the thing will know of the doctrine, whether it be thin air or solid facts. Dont be doubting Thomases, but go to and prove it for yourselves. BLIND R. L. Fishburo. H. H. Rolapp Nebeker A. TIGERS During the week, a prominent citizen informed us that there are six places in Brigham, besides the two drug stores, where liquor can be purchased in any quantities practically, at any time, he supplemented this with the further information that five of them are located on Forest street between Main street and the O. S. L Depot. This information came to the individual referred to from a party who uses liquor occasionally and who ought to know what he is talking about. When asked to designate the places, the second party refused to give the information, stating that he considered it unmanly to be an informer. e ts some-tffcte- - Vice-Pre- Asst Cashier GEO. A. ANDERSON, prominent fruit grower of this com inunity called at the News office one day this week and in the course of conversation informed the editor that he had recently acquired a large acreage of pasture and bay land, and he is now seriously investigating the matter of procuring a number of pure bred dairy cows and operate a farm stocked with thoroughbred milk and butter producers in connection with his acres of fruit lands. When men become so devoid of honor as to secretly hand out rotten whiskey to boys either for their own use or for delivery to Borne one else, whiskey which may be diluted and changed until it has nearly lost its Identity but taken strength in the amount of poison it contains, then it is time for the community to rise up enmasse and root them up and out of the community. No matter who they are, they should be run down and we can hardly conceive of a pen-alty, in the shape of a prison term or fine, that would be too severe. Out with the boot leggers and all others of their ilk. This community has said they shall not engage in their traffic here. Now its up to the community to see that they do not. PUBLIC UTILITIES The spirit of the times is for municipalities to own their own public utilities. In following the news of the day one reads of the movement among cities of the east to install and oper ate their own utilities and thus eliminate the trust in the commercial life of the community. Among the utilities mentioned are water works, elec-- , trie lights, sewer and telephone. Brigham City occupies a unique place in this state in this regard, for she is the first city of the state to own and operate her public utilities so far as water works and electric light are concerned. Because of her aggressiveness in this direction, she owned her own water works when the commonwealth became a state and when the makers of the constitution were framing that document, a special provision had to be written in it to apply specially to Brigham City, for at that time she was the only city In the state that would be affected. And the best part of it all is, that the experience of the years gone by has impressed upon the people the fact that this city can operate advantageously to all concerned, her own public utilities. For this reason the majority of the population favor a municipal telephone and went on record as favoring the appointment of a committee to That make a thorough investigation. reits and work at now is committee with interest. port is awaited Brigham City hag an opportunity to stand in the very front ranks in the matter of municipalities owning their own public utilities, for she already has a good start and the movement Is now agitating cities all over the United States. The telephone is the next in order and we dont anticipate anything but a favorable report by the committee, because we are firm in the conviction that whatever a community wants to do it can do, and this com munlty is mightily in favor of owning and operating its own telephone system, if private as well as public expression counts for anything. FRENZIED FINANCE A special hand colored Pathe three reel feature, telling a story of fashionable Parisian Life. Beautiful scenes and human interest have been accentuated, while the dramatic situations are decidedly interesting throughout, yet the most entertaining part is a beautiful dance, by professionable artists given by the storys hero a3 an entertainment for bis friends at a dinner party. It is called The Dance of the Golden Calf. It delighted a big fashionable audience so much at the Liberty Theatre, Salt Lake, when shown there a few weeks ago, that they applauded as though it had been produced on the stage before them. This strange Oriental dance raises the value of the production as an offering of high rank, for ip. it, something distinctly fresh is provided. In coloring, acting, direction, etc., it is a graceful film. In addition to this feature two hilarious Biograph comedies are shown His Autos Maiden Trip and The Clubman and the Cook.
