For the firmt time since Tuesday of last week tha stock exchange witnessed today- and general recovery. Every one of the seven business dais between the two dates had been marked by a downward tendency of prices and by nioro or less numerous points of special weakness, and many important shares, both Industrial and railway, had fallen 10 points or more during that period, on top of th extensive declines which had preceded it. On tha face of things therefore, today's recovery need . have caused no surprise, even when the buying came largely, aa it did. on today's market, from prev ioua speculators for ' the decline. Whatever the course ef the market ts to bo in the next few days, the significance of todays recovery, which ranged between two and six points in a vetv considerable number of stocks, was proof that the actual demand for stocks waa on not couiUerUalau ed, in ice effect prices, either by fon ed liquidation or by fresh sales of professional speculators. The market moved in one direction practically all day. It opened with overthe night advances and closed aiound which highest, after a total trading again, for the third successive day, went beyond a million shares, with the number of separate stocks again unusually large. The conspicuous advances were fairly distributed between the Industrial and railway shares, recovery being, aa a rule, proportioned to the declines of tha past few day. While the bond market as a whole did not show the same vigorous tendency to recovery as tho stock market, prices for Liberty bonds advanced sharply reflectof ing undoubtedlv both the removal speculative pressure and the putting-i- n of genuine buying orders when it appeared that tne decline waa checked. Tha change in the WhII street atmosphere, as a result of a days halt in the prolonged decline and reversal of the movement, was. In fact, unusually marked, the financial markets drifted many days ago Into a position where sentiment, rather than fact or reason, was the controlling influence It coqld hardly be doubted that todays recovery even in grain and cotton was a direct result of the better feeling In the Wall street markets The ftve-cerally tn wheat had other eauses; among them a continued export demand and the passage bv the house ad the emergency tariff bill for Rupoolng and high protective duties on wheat it Is diffiother agricultural products, cult to imagine, however, that even the per proposed prohibitive thirty cents bushel duty on wheat would profoundly affect supply and demand conditions in that trade In th nine montlp of 1920 for which w have the full reports our import of wheat was 5,200,006 bushels, as compared with an export of 130,000.-00- 0 .
