Most of the field crops are grown without irrigation as there is very little water for that purpose brought upon the land; in fa?t, for the most part, the gardens and fruit1 trees alone are watered and corn, potatoes and the small grains, are grown entirely without any effbrt at irrigating. The land is not as good a? on the west side of the river, but crops of all kind are promising a boun'i-fu- l fiekl. A stay of a couple of days at Dewey ville, enjoying the hospitality of Bishop Dewey and his estimable family, is enough to give one a favorable opinion of that portion of the valley.. The Bishop, by industry and attention to his business, has made a beautiful farm and surrounded himself with sufficiency of creature comforts and has created a pleasant home. A visit to the school there, taught by Miss Dewey, demonat that fact that the strates place, at least, the people take an interest in the education of their children. The bright eyes and quick responses of about twenty little ones, attest the care and painstaking of the teacher, and makes one look anxiously for the time when free schools shall bo established all through the Territory, and the cause of education be no longer hampered by tho short sighted policy wh'ch prevail? at present. It is a sad commentary upon the enterprise and intelligence of the nineteenth . century, that so many of the young blessed by nature with bright intellects, should be obliged to grow up with limited means of cultivation, through tho repressing policy of the leaders. It is our experience that the most of the better portion of the people are willing and anxious to give their children all tho advantages in their power, but every ffrt for their elevation- - is thwarted- and discouraged by the insane policy adopted by the We hope however rulers. that althis state of affairs cannot continue. of the ways Many now generation coming on,- seeing the results of a thorough education in others, will find means to gratify the thirst for knowledge which is implanted in them. The rapid settlement of the country, and consequent improvements in the methods of farming, and the loos ening of the iron grip on the proceeds of their labors, will soon give to the indus trious portion of the community a competence, which will enable them to give to their children, opportunities equalizing thoe of more favored localities. The building of the Bear liiver ditch, bringing the water down on each Mde of the valley, thus Retting the entire surface of the country under cultivation, will furnish homes lbr a hundred thousand people and fill our valley with a prosperous and intelligent population. Let us hope that those who are turning their attention in that direction will see the advantages ar.d push ahead the work.
