Wilson, Chicago, May 26 Solicitor of the Treasury Department, arrived in this city from Washington yesterday and will remain three or four days, for the purpose of giving legal advice to the Government officials who are in vestigating the whisky fraud. Many discrepancies have bee.j found whereby the Government has been swindled. The officials have recently struck a new lead, and will examine tho books of all the railroad companies leading from Chicago, for the purpose of learning the quantity of highwines and spirits thoy have carried away within the last four months. The books of the Lake Shore Railroad Company and the Star LinS have already been looked into, and information criminating several wholesale dealers lias been accumulated. When tho United States Grand Jury meets it is probable that two thirds or three quarters of the wholesale dealer in this city will be indicted for defrauding the Government. Tho Committee Reports. One f 'the good stories in General bhermans new book illustrates the lax notions of discipline that prevailed after the first'Bull Run. An officer in Shermans brigade cooly told the latter he was going home, as his term of service ead expired although he had not been mustered out. Old Teeuraseh replied that if he undertook to leave, he, Sherman, would shoot him on the spot. Sherman has a way oflooking as though he meant business, and the officer did Rot start, but the same day Mr. Lincoln visited the brigade. The rest of the story We give in Shermans words: In the crowd 1 saw the officer with e whom I had had the at reveille that morning. His lace vva pale, and his lips compressed. I foresaw a scene, but sat on the front seat of the carriage, a quiet as a lamb. This officer forced his way though the crowd to the carriage and said: Mr. President, I have a cause of grievance. Fills morning 1 went to speak to t'ulonel Sherman, and he threatened to shoot me. Mr. Lincoln, who wa still standing, said, Threatened to shoot j'ou? Ye, sir, he threatened to shoot me. Mr. Lincoln looked athirti and then at me, and stooping his tall, spare form toward the officer, said to him in a loud stage whisper, easily heard for some ymds around : Well, if I were you, and he threatened to shoot I would not trut him. for I believe he would do it. The officer turned about and disappeared, and the men laughed at him. boon the carriage drove on, and as we the hill, I explained the facts Of to the President, who answerel, course I didnt know anything about it, hut I thought you knew your own business best. I thanked him for his confidence, and assured him that what he had done would go far to enable me to maintain good discipline, and it did.
