SALT LAKE CITY a iJh "T,n (Opposite the Temple) ,, i J h , Houses, Y v I $ 1 f Much talk is being made about the of about twenty Senators and a numbt-- of railroad men to Mexico. It is rumored that the object of the visit i an examination of Northern Mexico, looking towards the purchase of that country by the United States. It ie said that the Mexican Government it not only willing but desirous to make the proposed arrangement. The portion of country included in the proposed purchase is all that region north of Rio Rnpidev containing bout423, 000 square miles of territory. It embraces the rich mining districts of Chihuahua, Sonora, and portion of Sinaloa, Durango, and some of the other States, This region containtsome of the richest mines in Mexico, many of them having been worked since prior to the Spanish conquest, besides a large portion- of the It will country that ie unprospected'. for the enterprise of open a large our adventurous spirits, and will aid considerably in enriching our whole country. Large amounts of gold and silver are now annually taken out of those mine9, and with proper machinery, a thorough system of mining and an infusion of American enterprise, the yield will be greatly increased. Much of the country is fertilo, witb a climate unsurpassed anywhere, furnishing in its varieties of altitude all the northern, and tropical productions. It is capable of sustaining a much more danse population than countries farther north. The mining regions already developed, together with those that shall be opened by our hardy prospectors, will pour a steady stream of wealth into all portions of our common country. Owing to the unsettled state of the country there has been but little security for life or property there, and its development has beenjeept at a stand still. The raid? of the Indians have been constant, and the country has ever been infested with banditti, composed principally of the The Government, too, mixed races. nearly always in a state of revolution, has been as great an enemy to progress as either the Indians-o- r the banditti. The country for these reasons is sparsely settled in most localities and its resources Should eur Governbut little known. ment acquire the terrifory and insure peace and safety there, an influx of our there- - would soon very people change the whole aspect of things. The mines would be developed and their products coming into circulation would soon solve the vexed question of how shall we return to specie payments? The agricultural lands will be settled up and improved, and a rich empire be built up there having a common interest with the rest of our Union. Some newspapers are discouraging the proposed movement, using the argument that we want no more territory until what we have is all settled up. This looks about as reasonable to us as it would for a merchant to refuse to buy more goods until the last article of his eld stock is cleared out. The more country we have open to settlement, and the greater inducements we can bfler, the greater- - number of persons wo will attrnet to all parts of the country. Instead of retarding the settling of the portions now partially occupied, it will give a fresh inpetus to immigration. The Atlantic States have a large surplus population which must seek home 3 somewhere, while all Europe is swarming with people. The great safely of a Federal Republic is in constant expansion. Let the Government acquire that territory, and give adequate protection to its citizens both there and elsewhere, and the additional revenue will soon solve the question of the payment of the national debt. We haVe none too much territory, in fact there is too little. What we want is better protection and more eneourgemant. Let the great monopoly which has fenced in Alaska with a barrier stronger than the Chinese wall be abolished. Let the Government, instead of sending troops to drive out and harass our - pioneeis, adopt measures to encourage and protect them, and the unoccupied portions will soon fill up. The valleys f Utah would soon be teaming with an industrious and intelligent population were we assured a prompt and ready punishment of criminals and eur rights not left to the mereyof a lecherous and avaricious priesthood. WTe hope then that the tffortto secure that country will bo successful, in spite of the croakers who are always scenting danger in every movement to extend our boundaries. The same cry was raised on the acquisition of of Texas and California, but experience has demonstrated the wisdom of the policy of expansion. semi-tropic- TALI-IS- , - f cut usx Asrrac WACCS 9 v ) V ?!
