AT THE OCCIDENTAL A Review Corinne, called "by many tho burg on the Bear, but known to all as tho banner business town ofNorthern Utah, was settled in February, I860. A number of Gentiles who bad found their way into tho Territory and spent a portion of tbo winter at Salt Lake city, becoming disgusted with tbe ways and practices of the Latter-daSaints, wandered to tho west bank of Bear River, in Box Elder county, t5ok a survey of the magnificent valley that lay stretched out before them, and concluding that here would be the point f crossing of th Pacific Railroad, camped and commenced tbe work of building a city. The land was secured, and a contract made with tbe U. P. R. R. Co. to lay out and survey tho town, giving alternate lots for compensation. After concluding this contractor town-sit- e company felt that fortune and faaee were theirs. "With so powerful a cor- -" poration as joint owners with them in a town located bn the line of their road, and a location commanding the trade of Montana and Idaho, accessible to tbe largest and most feitile agricultural disof our own Territory,., why tricts should they not hope, for success? On the 25th of Marchfollowing, the day appointed for the sale of town lots at auction te tho highest bidder for cash, hundreds of men from Salt Lake, Denver, Cheyenne, Ogden and other towns, gathered here to invest in lute some with a view to speculation, many to secure business locations whereon to erect Etores, hotale, dwellings, etc., for the accommodation of stocks of goods then en route, guests already here, and families anxious to join their enterprising lords. More thand00 lots wero disposed of, at prices ranging from $5 to $1,000 each. In the two weeks following more than 30C frame buildings and tents were put up, the town containing at this time more than 1,500 inhabitants, a temporary city government was organized, with mayor, council and police force. On the 18th of February, 1870, the legislative assembly of Utah incorporated the town under the name of Corinne City, the charter granting the necessary powers to enable the council to protect citizens. cnuncHKB. The rector of St. Marks chnrch, Salt Lake City, paid us a visit and hold service in the City Hall, early in June, 1869, the congregation consisting of six devout citizens, and during service a crowd of two hundred gathered in front of the building and organized a foot race, which so disgusted tbe reverend gentleman that it was months before he could be induced to return to Corinne. About this time the Superintendent of Miesions for tbe Presbyterian Church sent here a young man, who with the aid of the Superintendent originated the first Christian church, with ten members, anc immediately commenced the construe tion of tho Presbyterian Church build-lnThe Methodist brethren commenctc about the same time and soon completec tbe beautiful brick edifice which adorns Colorado street. The foot race business upon the Sabbath was not attemptec after the time, mentioned, and in fact rowdyism had departed, and Corinne assumed the air of a well regulated anc moral community.
