Byera. of the News, just over from the Hot, Springs, Middle Perk, kindly furnishes us the following &ni mated account of a bar fite that oc curred there recently. Rocky Mountain Jim, an old mountainecer, who has been a lonely adventurous wanderer among these mountains since 1842, living at the savages do upon what he could find among the beasts of the field and tha birds of the air, having strange encounters now and then with both, escaping perils by tiood and perils by fire, ,the claws of bears and the teeth of hyenas, met in the year one thousand eight hunmore than hit dred and seventy-one- , in this adventurous match field, and tall a lacerated victim before its terrible anger. While on an excursion a few days since to Grand Lake, at the mouth of tbe south fork of Grand river, he spied some deer. Having no arms save one navy revolver, he endeavored bv stealthy stops to approach near enough to kill one. Meantime his faithful dog went skirmishing amongst the uuderbursh near at band and soon came out with a yelp, followed by an immense cinnamon bear, in a towering rage at having th$ abode of her young and thriving cubs thus rudely invaded. Making for Jim with flashing eyes, extended arms and gnashing teeth, Jim turned from his pursuit of the deer to his irate enemy and fired four shots hto her. On she came erect and terrible, minding bullets no more than if they were pebbles thrown by gentle hands, on and on until escape was impossible. Seizing Jim by his left qrm she crushed it at a blow. Another Hash from the pistol and another ball went into her prodigious body. Then came the final struggle. Bruins next blowTell upon his head, tearing half, the scalp clean from the skull and cutting a fearful gash under the ear. One eye was torn completely from its socket and destroyed ; his breast was crushed in, fingers of both hands chawed off, feet frightfully lacerated by tbe close contest with feet armed with resistless claws. At last the poor old mountaineer yielded the victory. Bleeding from every pore, nerveless and insensible he sank to the ground in a pool of blood, the bear falling heavily upon him. How long he lay there he knew not, but on recovering his senses, found Bruin goneand himself a mutilated wreck. Crawling slowly to his horse, which happily was near by, he mounted, lode awhile, .and fell to the ground unconscious. Awaking from this after some hours ho again mounted, and after a long and painful ride reached he Springs, where he was taken in and cared for. Dr. Pollock, of Georgetown, happening to be there, dressed his wounds, and while the chances are against him, his irou constitution may ing him out. Jim says he has had many a fight with bars, black, cinnamon and grizzly, but this is the first that ever got the best of him. Central City Register. SIGN OF X HE BIG SHOE carefully keep it out. 2V stair-caswindow left open during the night will often cool the passage of a house, and the rooms, too, if the doors be not shut ; but it must be. closed by 8 or 9 oclock in the morning, or, if on tho sunny side, at 4 or 5 oclock, and the blind drawn. The mistake people generally make is to throw open their windows at all hours of the day, no matter whether the atmosphere outside be cool or scorching. Let us have some air, they say, ai,d in comes the treacherous breeze for even hot air is pleasant while it is gently blowing, taking away perspiration, and thereby' cooling the slcin ; but the apart ment is made warmer, instead of cooler, and as soon as they move out of the draught they find their room to be more uncomfortable than before. Let in cool air keep out hot that is the only formula to insure the minimum of discomfort. Sitting rooms may generally be kept cool during the whole day if the doors be only opened for ingress and egress, and the windows kept closed and shielded from the direct sunshine by a blind. If the atmosphere of a room be impure from any cause, let it be renewed ; hot air is less injurious than bad air. If a room be small in comparison with tbe number of persons enjaged in it, free ventilation becomes indispensable. In a cooking apartment the temperature will probably be higher than outside; hence, the free admission of hot air will be desirable.. If persons do not object to sit in a direct (fraught of, air, the windows and doors may be opened --- a breeze being more refreshing, even several degrees wanner than still though But under nearly all other circumair. stances rooms should be kept closed an much as possible until after sundown, or until the air outside is cooler than that inside. Let in cool air ; keep out hot.- London Times. e , - i - j. It is a most significant fact that sluoa CAL.
