Each holding of the fair should mark a revolution in fruit culture. The exhibit in this department received merited praise from Salt Lake and other outside part- ' ies. matter. NEEDS A WATER SYSTEM. It seems extremely fortunate that the fire at the Booth Store last Wednesday was nipped in the bud, and that no serious damage resulted. At the time of its breaking out there was no water running in the ditches, either on Main or First Northstreet. When first noticed the fire was shooting from the roof. It would only have taken twenty minutes for the whole structure to have been in flames. Men hurried off for water, luckily finding the large cistern or tank, owned by Tudge F. I. Dagget in the contigious lot, full, and with this supply it took but a short time to extinguish the fire. Had it not been for the near proximity of the tank the building would likely have burned, and with such a start the fire would ery probably hive consumed the whole business block, including the Whitehead, Andrus, Nelson and Smith stores, with t he barber shop, and possibly the old building. It would hate been the greatest fire St. George lias ever experienced had it gone a half hour longer unobserved. Such incidents remind us how advantageous it would be to the city to possess a water system. In this one incident sufficient property might have been destroyed to more than cover the cost of putting in a system. Should the Cottonwood water be used for the purpose, the expense would not be very large. WTt is there to hijider such a project? Some argue that the claims of shareholders are not definitely settled, but that condition we believe could easily be rectified. who have Residents used this water, prefer it very much to the water formerly used, and in present use, in various parts of the town. The stream, as far as can be estimated, would be quite large enough to supply the whole city. A good water system would better inconceivably the health conditions It needs no argument to become convinced of the fact that diseased conditions are engendered by the present state of the ditches. It would be an easy matter to enlarge on the advantages which would result from a water system, from the standpoint of convenience and other such considerations, but the present exigencies of the situation bring a stronger argnment to bear on the subject than that of comfort. The city needs a water system. It ought to have it, and it would not be a step too far, for a few prominent citizens to say that it must have it. post-offic- e -- The first number of the Lincoln Record under its new management received this week. The former publisher, H. E. Freudenthol has leased the plant to Chas.W. Garrison. The paper will follow a liberal policy and will be published largely in the nterest of the mining camps at Pioche and vicinity. Mr. Garrison fia$ the best wishes of The Advo- cate. Much benefit should result from the holding of the fair last week. Greater activity in all industrial spheres should be stimulated.
