African-America- n and Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrated also in Africa, the Caribbean, South America especially Brazil and African communities in Britain and other European countries. In KiSwahili, one of Africas major languages and the chosen language of the holiday, kwanzaa means first fruits. Celebrated first in 1966 by its creator, Dr. Maulana Karenga, Kwanzaa is based on African harvest celebrations and the Nguzo Saba, or seven principles. Karenga is a professor at California State University at Long Beach. Kwanzaa brings a cultural message which speaks to the best of what it means to be African and human in the fullest sense, Karenga says in a founders' welcome on his Official Kwanzaa Web site. The holiday then will, of necessity, be engaged as an ancient and living cultural tradition which reflects the best of African thought and practice in its reaffirmation of the dignity of the human of famperson in community and culture, the well-bein- g ily and community, the integrity of the environment and our kinship with it, and the rich resource and meaning 26-Ja- ns n.
