Show Hilltop November 22, 2000 Squadron Retention is a big issue and something in my current position. Many airmen are being faced with the decision and more often than not, choosing to get out. I stay in for a couple reasons. One, I have many opportunities in the Air Force to learn and grow. The jobs are interesting and there is a good emphasis on Professional Military Education, a masters degree, and other educational programs. Ive been given a large amount of responsibility in all of my jobs, allowing me to be challenged and to develop leadership skills. I know I will continue to receive greater challenges so I can reach my potential. It seems to me that my counterparts in the civilian world have much less responsibility and less chance to grow or shine. Secondly, I feel that I receive plenty of respect and appreciation as a captain in the Air Force. I have made some sacrifices to earn that, but I dont see the same level of status for civilian engineers. Thirdly, I feel I am part of something bigger than myself. My profession is much more than just a steady paycheck. Part of it is patriotism and part of it is camaraderie. I am able to build strong working relationships and feel confident in the integrity and dedication of our unit. I think the Air Force is special in that we have higher standards and better quality people, and thus a strong reputation in our communities. I dont think that is quite so true for the private sector. I believe the benefits for officers are pretty decent. I feel I can maintain a good quality of life with my salary, even if I could make more on the outside. I dont think that is as true for enlisted. Retirement pay and medical benefits are a big concern these days. The high rate of deployments is another retention challenge, because that can make it difficult to balance work, family; and personal life. Ive had a great experience in the Air Force so far and am proud of what I have accomplished and the people that Ive worked with. Ive experienced firsthand Capt.
