The staff moved to a facility la'st spring which provides a better office environment and we are updating the systems furniture. We have also provided them with newer computers and other office equipment. Obviously, since you asked the question, you arent satisfied with the upgrades we have made to this point. Quite frankly, Im not either, but your question brings up the larger issue of why all our professionals arent given the best conditions and equipment. Its simply reflective of the funding limitations were under. This ALC had to step up to the facility and equipment requirements that the competition brought in from closing centers to ensure that readiness and capability were intact. We would like to ensure that each and every facility Maj. Gen. Scott Bergren, Ogden ALC commander, asked for questions from the audience during the Oct. 5 Commanders Call. The following is the fourth installment of answers to the submitted questions. Whats being done to bring new workloads to Hill? A At every opportunity, each of us need to be actively marketing this depot as the Air Forces home of innovation and excellence. If we keep proving that, with our day-i- n and day-operformance, I ut guarantee the new work will come our way. Along that line, I signed a policy letter on Aug. 28 that says each organization with a requirement to contract for depot level maintenance or repair must submit a workload approval package to and Programs Directorates Strategic Planning Division. Would it be possible to open the North Gate at these times? A Unfortunately, we will not open the North Gate for several reasons. First, DoD and Air Force Instructions require that we operate only the minimum number of gates necessary to support the mission. The North Gate would simply be a convenience gate and our utilization history reports show that fewer than 200 cars would use it to enter or exit the base on any given day. Additionally, posting someone at the North Gate is not the best use of the limited resources available to security forces. During the peak periods when traffic is entering the base we would have to remove one of our limited patrols from the road to man that gate. As we all must in our home budgets, the Air Force must balance its resources in the best manner possible to support our national security priorities. This being said, we have been able to fund nearly $5 million in pavement projects during FY 2000. One of the projects accomplished was a $3.8 million runway repair effort, which I think everyone would agree directly supports the Centers mission. Repairs to the base pavements are accomplished in a priority order and we will continue to try to balance the limited resources against maintaining our nearly 228 miles of roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks.
