Show mnm 16 firvrrii Hilltop? November 2, 2000 o s; b n in March ski invitational hosting 75 competitors are required to hold the meet. The entry deadline is Jan. 1, but its recommended entrants by Mary Galbraith Hilltop Times staff sign up by December. Military members who watched the Sydney games last month imagining what its like to race in the worlds elite sports arenas have a chance to realize those dreams this winter by competing at the same venue where top athletes will battle for gold during the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Winter Games. Service members and Department of Defense employees have a chance to ski the greatest snow on earth (one year before the games athletes venture down Utah slopes) during the 2001 Hill AFB Ski Invitational March Kelly Hendrickson, a Services Specialist here, said the event is one of a kind. Hill is the only base that does the ski meet and opens it up not only to Air Force, but all of the military bases and branches. Utah has the best snow on earth, youre skiing where Olympians will compete at one of the best resorts in the country and youre getting discount prices, she said. Hendrickson said the base has had good participation from other services like the Marines and Navy in past years and shes already had a New York Air National Guard unit show interest. Shes looking forward to seeing which base and branch of the military is top on the slopes during this years new format. The competition is also switching venues, which organizers hope will add a professional touch. For the first time the event will be held at Park City Mountain Resort, which will run the meet from start to finish (in the past base volunteers worked as scorekeepers and gatekeepers). Hendrickson said the resort has been very accommodating arid is excited about supporting the military community. Events will be held in one of the 2002 Olympic arenas. Competitors will ski the same mountain Olympians will ski. Not too many people can say that because even the people that buy a daily pass at Park City Competitors must be at least 18 and affiliated with the Department of Defense. Military members receive priority and civil service and NAF employees will be placed on a waiting list until Jan. 1. At that time, remaining slots will be fdled based on the date applications were received first come, first served. The invitational entry fee is $225 per person, which includes competition fees for four different events, a four-da- y ski pass and a long sleeve Spectators and family members can purchase a four-daski pass for $160 through Outdoor Recreation however passes at the special rate must be purchased at the same time the entry fee is mailed. . Events, broken down by age and ability, include the Giant Slalom, Regular Slalom, Snowboarding (in T-shi- rt. y 12-1- 5. its debut) and Team Competition as well as the Skimeister competition an award. Women are encouraged to race in the competitions, and two seconds will be deducted in team events for groups with at least one female competitor. The top base team, individual event winders and the Skimeister winner will receive awards. Outdoor recreation is working with major ski sponsors to procure prizes like snowboards, skies and jackets for winners. While lodging arrangements are up to competitors, the Mountain View Inn Lodging facility at Hill AFB (about 90 minutes from the resort) and the Hampton Inn at Park City are making special arrangements for competitors and will provide transportation to the site. Details are available in entry form packets available e at www.hill.af.milservicesout-door- . all-arou- March 12-15,20- 01 arent allowed in the arena. Thats pretty unique, Hendrickson said. Participants will also have an opportunity to visit other Olympic venues like the ski jump, bobsled and aerial sites. Thats going to be pretty cool to see some of the Olympians practicing if competitors want to take the time to go over and look. Not a lot of people will be able to say theyve seen them in action, Hendrickson said. All branches and bases are invited to participate. The competition is limited to 110 entrants, although that may be extended depending on interest.
