Show 18 July 29, 1999 Mr3 Dd m n on S m G i?sq Dim oa o3 Hilltop Times staff The 34th Fighter Squadron gave the men of the 388th Ammo an appropriately Rude reception in the title game of the intramural softball championships, laying the wood on Ammo 15-"It was just all around great team ball," said 34th FS pitcher Steven Harvey. "We did it with base hits and defense, and that's the way we won all our games in the tournament." The Rude Rams turned this one into a game of catch up, scoring early and often, forging an 1 2 lead in just the second inning. A first inning, six-ru- n explosion, where the Rams batted through the order, set the tone for the game. Ammo was playing from behind the rest of the game, managing just four runs over the first four innings of play. 7. 1-- "Everyone hit the ball well," said Rams' left fielder Jeremiah Johnson who went 4 at the plate, scoring three 3-- n n GoGO 0 in the intramural tournament," agreed Harvey, who went 5 at the plate with two runs scored. The Rams played a good game punctuated by solid defense and two big innings, but they also got some help from their "inanimate teammate," Rudezilla. Rudezilla is the compressed air. horn the Rams bring to all their functions. Throughout the game, Rudezilla sounded off loudly in support of the Rams, in derision of the umpires, and in repeated attempts to rattle the men of Ammo. SMSgt. Allen Niksich, the Rams' first sergeant, said that Rudezilla was created to increase the morale of the squadron. "We built Rudezilla to let people know we're there," Niksich said. "Rudezilla is with us wherever the squadron goes. People cringe when they see Rudezilla come through the doors." Right now, with the championship trophy locked away in the Rams' case, other teams cringe when the 34th FS runs. "I liked how the team backed up everybody. No real mistakes were made, and everyone stayed together as a by Steven R. Ford Hill r 3-- team." After the second inning, the Rams seemed to let up, scoring just one run over the next six innings, but the 34th FS added three runs in the top of the seventh to push the lead to the final margin. Ammo couldn't manage a hit in the bottom of the seventh as the Rams retired them in order to end the game. Ammo was steady, scoring roughly one run each inning, but they never seemed to be able to put together the big inning, the sustained run that would put them over the top. Charles McKinney and Jerry Crawford both went 4 with two runs scored apiece. "Kudos to Ammo," said Rams' short stop Sean Murphy. "They gave us a good game. They were a tough team to beat." "Ammo played us the hardest, toughest game we played 2-- take the field. in football program youth danger by Steven R. Ford Hilltop Times staff The youth football program is in danger of being removed from the list of sports available to Hill AFB children as a result of poor participation. With the registration deadline passing on July 24, Hill found itself short in all weight divisions. If additional players cannot be found soon, Hill may be forced to cancel teams in various weight classes for the 1999 season. "After registration day, we didn't have enough sign-up- s to field a team in any weight class," said Jim Dicus of the Youth Activities Center. "We only had about 50 kids sign up, and last year we had twice that many." pitting the best teams in each weight class against each Dicus said that if support and participation cannot be generated for youth tackle football at Hill, the program will likely be terminated after the 1999 season.
