Show J" Brow IV Godfrey U A win r f Y- v - : 1 ;r v. fr jv i by Steven R. Ford Hilltop Times staff Jason Brown sprinted across the finish line in 15:02 on Saturday to claim first place in the United States Air Force 5K run walk. With a large field turning out for the morning 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) race, Brown, whose father is an Air Force retiree, took over after the first mile and never looked back. An every day runner, Brown was right on his average of a mile, building up a lead of nearly one and a half minutes over the second place finisher, A1C Duane Dauphin. "I don't like chasing people," said Dauphin who finished with a time of 16:29. "I started setting the pace, and then I went to stay up with him and he was gone. I said, Toil have a blast, man. I'll see you there.' "I know my limits. He had it more than I did, so I just stayed at my own pace." "It was a good course and lots of fun," Brown said. "I usually take it out slowly at first and just go from there. After the first mile, I was in the lead, so I just set the pace after that." Dauphin may have been the surprise of the race due to his powerful frame. Dauphin, a wrestler and third place finisher in the 1998 Open Bench Press Competition says that he tries for a complete workout, including at least 20 minutes of cardiovascular work each day. Regardless, those with strong upper bodies don't usually do well in road races, but while hot on Brown's heels, Dauphin came across the finish line over two and a half minutes ahead of third place racer, Mike McGrath. My back was cramping a little because of weight lifting, so I was sort of stretching the whole way." Sprinting across the line first for the women was old Terilyn Godfrey who, at 23:14, finished a minute and 30 seconds ahead of her father, Glen. The younger Godfrey runs the mile on the North Layton Junior High School team and admitted to not being prepared for a full Pi 14-ye- ar 5K. "Well it was pretty good," Godfrey said, "but I felt like I could have kicked it a little bit earlier. But it was a nice race. I probably could have gone a little faster." The elder Godfrey begrudgingly acknowledged his d daughter's superiority on the open road, but there was obvious pride in the way he talked about his 111 new-foun- 14-ye- ar old flier. "This year I'm finishing behind her," Godfrey laughed. she feels pretty good about that. Maybe later on in the year that will change, but right now, she's faster. "I think "She did well. She could have done a lot better. She's not used to the 5K. She runs the mile a lot, so she's not used to pacing herself for the three miles." A Great Dining Experience For 20 Years!
