It is rising above our southeastern horizon between 10 and 11 p.m., and progressively earlier as the fall months come to a close. Possibly the most photographed object by those with a modest telescopes and is easily found with binoculars. First, find the constellation Orion, then locate the three stars of Orions belt. The farthest east of those three stars is Zeta Orioms. From this star go south down Orions sword, and the next to last point of light in his sword is the nebula. Just about any size of binoculars will show a fuzzy area under the star. Low power with a telescope starts to resolve shape. Jerrys blend of resource expertise, people skills and rock-solireputation d within the community makes him the ideal person for the job, said Lamb. We have an opportunity, if not the obligation, to try to build something completely new and fresh here something that adds diversity to the forms of land e found management on the federal lands of the West, said Lamb. The proclamation establishhere-to-for- ing this particular monument was visionary in many ways. The BLM has been directed to not only protect the land but to allow, within the proper conservation context, a number of traditional uses that will help to keep people on the land and pass on our Western heritage, said Lamb. Im excited about this shared opportunity to build a common vision for the Grand Staircase-Escalant- e that could, if we do it right, protect some of the most remarkable land on earth while sustaining the cultural identity that makes the region so special and rare. We just need to work together, said Lamb. President Clinton established the Grand Staircase-Escalat- Utahs pioneer heritage. Mike Barker, park manager at This Is The Place State Park, was honored for his considerable work coordinating this ambitious restoration project. Barkers efforts helped make possible this premier centennial project, a lasting legacy for all Utahns and its visitors to enjoy. Utah State Parks and Recreation Director Courtland Nelson presented an award to Trails Coordinator John Knudson on behalf of Knudsons peers for his leadership of the Pioneer Memorial Backway Enhancement Project. This project involved placement of five new interpretive plaques and four descriptive panels as wayside exhibits along the Pioneer Memorial Scenic Backway which is also the route of the Mormon Pioneer, California and Pony Express national historic trails. Knudson was instrumental in coordinating the efforts of several agencies and completing the project for the 1997 sesquicen-tennia- l anniversary of the establishment of the Mormon Pioneer Trail. e National Monument on September 18, 1996.
