"I'm striving to make the Spanish Trail Arena a nationfaally recognized multi-evecility by providing professionally produced entertainment, as well as offering various recreational facilities at little or no cost to residents of Grand County." The Spanish Trail Arena was built in 1991 to stimulate the county economy by attracting professional events. The Grand County Council considered selling the facility after expenses increased, revenues stagnated and two unsuccessful attempts to hire a full time director. Doug Jones was hired in March after presenting a business plan which would recover the costs of operating the Arena in one year nt and produce a profit in years to come. He was approved by a vote. 7-- 0 Councilman Ray Pene stated .that the county council wanted to see the Arena as a money producer instead of a drain on the taxpayers. "His proposals were energetic, he seemed to have a reasonable understanding of the business and knows how to deal with people." Jones plans to recover operating costs by holding more professional events. The summer is already booked with 3 professional rodeos, 12 weekly rodeos, 4 monthly open horse shows, and 1 quarter horse show. Moneys are collected through renting the facilities, selling concessions, advertising, and boarding animals for special events.
