On Thursday, December 13, the club and new class members gathered together in the Civic Center. Caller, Richard Berry called a fun dance for nearly five squares of dancers. A potluck dinner was held at 7 p.m., followed by a gift exchange. The beginning class has been learning the basic cnlla on Tuesday evenings since September. Many of the club members commented on the fact that the class was doing real well and learning . . . full of people, as it moves along at 80 miles per hour and and the plane touched down, rolled across the top of the bus, then flew off again. Later the plane was strapped to the top of the A-l- bus, as it raced down the highway, thus giving the illusion of the landing. At the same time, the helicopter landed its cargo in the back of a pickup truck on top of a diesel car transport, then set down on the carrier behind the pickup truck. This was no illusion. The stunt pilot and driver actually pulled it off. According to George White, chairman of the Moab Film Promotion Board, the production provided a welcome boost to the local economy. To show appreciation, the board presented both Mr. Shepherd and Mr. Bail with a pen set. The sets had a picture of the plane chase over Choke Canyon scrimshawed on elephant ivory, with a hardwood base. Each of their names and Choke Canyon - Filmed in Moab, Utah were etched on the reverse side. The presentation was made on location near the Sand Flats road. The company was filming a ground chase, ending with two large Blazers racing over a cliff and exploding below. This was their final scene before leaving Moab. Other filming During the past two months there have been two Marlboro commercials and a Sears battery commercial filmed in the Moab area, in addition to Choke Canyon. A number of other companies are presently looking at Moab as a possible site for feature films and commercials. The Film Promotion Board credits some of the increased interest to the mailout campaign, initiated locally and at the state level, of the Special Film Edition of the MAP brochure. The State Film Development office has sent out about 1,500 copies to various producers and agencies over the past year. Several hundred copies have been sent to key persons in the industry by the Moab Film Promotion Board. The board has also continued their advertising in the major film directories and magazines. Moab Film Promotion is now located in the new central service office at 150 East Center, Room 202. Their phone number is Bette Stanton is unit director. The board has four members whose terms will expire Dec. 31. The vacancies are filled by appointments from the Grand County Economic Development, Travel Council, Moab Area Promotion and the Chamber of Commerce. Packed with suspense Ground action involved some harrowing stunts during a drive chase with vehicles, and scenes utilizing a trick horse and a kid goat. The picture is packed with suspense. As for what happens to the radioactive waste, Halleys Comet, and Dr. Lowells experiment, youll have to see the movie to find out. Choke was Canyon produced by an Italian company, with Executive Producer Ovidio G. Assonitis. The Producer Association on location in Moab was Peter Shepherd. The feature was directed by Chuck Bail, who was no stranger to the local film committee. Mr. Bail worked on an earlier picture in the Moab area and was 'well acquainted with the spectacular scenery. Local impact The company spent about six weeks in Moab, between scouting for locations and actual filming. There were 40 people in their crew, and their budget for goods and services in the Moab area totaled about $500,000. About 125 local people were hired to work as extras, drivers, stockmen, etc. Three of those hired were asked to travel on to Salt Lake City and California to O VISITS DAUGHTER Mrs. Zella Burdick has returned from Monticello where she had been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Sam (Guyla) Rowley and family. Broumie Troop No. 758 has been busy this year Neighborhood Girl Scot Christmas Event this Friday, Dec. 21. The neighborhood plans to have a Mitten Tree at Western Plaza Friday night at 6:30. All the scouts will donate mittens, scarfs, hats, sweaters, coats, etc. to the needy of Moab. Then all the girl scouts in Moab will sing Christmas songs around the tree. They will continue to carol in front of the stores on Main Street to show their appreciation of the support the merchants give to the scouts throughout the pleasure to give and a joy to receive a City Market Fresh Fruit Sift Basket! The girls enjoyed seeing behind the machines as much as bowling. On Dec. 11th the Brownies were invited to eat lunch at the Sundwall Center. All the children paired up to make name tags. After lunch the Brownies enjoyed playing on a new playground. The troop sang to their new friends. The students at the Sundwall Center taught the Brownies to sing We Wish You a Merry Christmas in sign language. It was a very Brownie Troop 758 has 14 members. The girls are first and second graders from HMK, and have been very busy this year. Being a Brownie is not all fun. There is a lot of work the girls must do to earn patches and badges. Brownies also help around the community; in February the troop will make favors for the hospital. The troop is attending the Bedrock FRESH FRUIT GIFT BASKETS enjoyable day.
