Show Page B2 THE DAILY HERALD. Provo, Utah, Friday, March 7, 1997 SUNDANCE: (Continued from Page Bit variety of outdoor, noncompetitive activities. And who knows how many parents named their children or dogs Sundance after seeing the movie. Sundance is the name of a reggae musician and poet who lives and performs in Hawaii. Sundance DiGiovanni, 24, has his own Internet home page. He said he was born on a hippie farm in upstate New York but now lives in the Big Apple. Bonnie Sundance lives in Colorado and in the '60s was a Peace Corps volunteer in Peru where the Incas once worshiped the Sun God. Sundance Urie is a junior at Timpview High School and he said he is often teased by people calling him a "ski resort." Why was he named Sundance? "My dad was a ski instructor at Sundance," Urie said. Even exotic animals have been named Sundance. Hughes Sundance Kid is a beautiful Chilean llama that now lives in Olympia, Wash., with 49 other llamas that are owned by Kat McKinney. Interestingly, there's a Utah connection there, although not one you would expect. Asked why she named her llama Sundance, McKinney said. "I didn't; it was already named Sundance when I bought it." Actually, it's McKinney with the Utah connection. She attended Brigham Young University in the '60s and used to ski at the Provo Canyon ski resort before it was renamed Sundance. "I was from Southern California, and my best friend was LDS, decided to go with her to so school in Utah." McKinney said. She explained that her llama has a twin. And when the twins were born, the original owner named one Butch Cassidy and the other the Sundance Kid. Just like the Energizer bunny, the proliferation of Sundance goes on and on and on and you get the idea Sundance could have been the name of a public school in Utah County. It w as one of the more popular names proposed last year for the new high school in north Orem that eventually was named Timpanogos High School. Sundance was also suggested for the new elementary school in Lindon that was finally named Mountain Rocky Elementary School. Stephanie Vincent, PTA president at Rocky Mountain and a member of the naming committee, said Sundance was hot in the running for the name. "But I called Sundance ski resort and asked them if we could use the name, and they said they wouldn't let us use it." Vincent said. i. Accepting no for an answer the popular Sundance name fell by the wayside. Sundance goes much farther back than William Goldman's screenplay and one actor deciding to borrow the name for his ski resort. Debby Boyce. a librarian at Provo Public Library, said one of the earliest accounts of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is by Charles Kelly of Salt Lake City, i'n his book the "Outlaw Trail. The library has a 1959 edition in its protected special collection sec 1 FLOODS: (Continued from Page Bl I Study was commissioned by the city to assess the new potential for Hooding. "We'll need some more storm drain piping." says Dameron. "From the results of the study, we decided we'd have to assess a storm water impact lee on all new developments. And all residents will have to pay a small storm water utility fee." Though expansion of the storm drainage system has not yet begun in earnest, the city is not overly concerned about spring flooding. "Lindon won't get it as bad as other cities." says Dameron. "We're already in the process of filling 3,000 sandbags that we just They're stationed purchased. strategically, ready to go. That should handle any localized flooding." David Thurgood of JUB Engineers, which provides civil engineering services for Lindon, downplayed the flooding dangers. "The city owns a vacuum flush-e- r truck, and they're using that to clean the silt out of the storm drains." says Thurgood. "Lindon basically has no flooding problems associated with spring runoff." 's Thurgood points out that to greatest vulnerability flooding is on the other side of town, where it borders Utah Lake. "In the past, they've had some flooding from the lake down in the landfill area out by 2000 West." says Thurgood. "That may be a problem this y ear." Flooding from the lake will become a more serious issue as Lindon develops the land west of which is now largely vacant of structures, but is zoned for heavy industry'. Just last month, the city council approved a zone change that paves the way for Kenny Seng Construction to establish headquarters on a piece of land just east of 2000 West. Bill Alder, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Utah office, calls the Utah Lake scenario "a tough one to call." "Jordanelle and Deer Creek are pretty much full, and Utah Lake is Snow-pac- k already in the Utah Lake drainage area is at 156 percent of normal, so that's a tough management call." says Alder. "The Great Salt Lake will hold a lot; the problem is the it can only take so Jordan River much, and it's going to be handling a lot of run off from the six Salt Lake Valley creeks." Alder stresses the unpredictability of spring flooding. "Everybody wants to know exactly where and how much its going to flood, but it's really hard to say. It depends a lot on how much more water we get and how fast it gets warm. But with the snowpack we have, we'd better be on our toes." New Hearing Device To Be Field Tested By Local Company Edison Stanford Labs is currently fitting and field testing a new type of hearing aid designed for those individuals who suffer with moderate to severe NERVE TYPE hearing loss who have trouble understanding even loud speech. This new device is being manufactured by Starkey Labs of Minneapolis. Mn. worlds largest manufacturer of In The Ear Instruments. Mike Lloyd, president of Edison Stanford Labs, (a hearing aid dispensing and service company with locations in Provo and Salt Lake City) says his firm has been field testing the new system for several months in this area with very good success. According to Lloyd, better hearing is achieved by interfacing a powerful post aticular amplifier with a transducer placed deep within the ear canal resulting in better quality speed sound reproduction with higher grain and output levels and less feedback and distortion. This is a major breakthrough for people who suffer from severe nerve type hearing loss. Those individuals who would like more information about this new technology can call . . . 373-588- 7 In Provo |
