This will be the Symphony's 51st season and the eighth under Music Director Joseph Silverstein. Re- garding the new season, the Maestro commented, "We start our second century following in the traditions of the first 50 years of the Utah Symphony Orchestra by presenting masterpieces from the best loved repertoire coupled with the stimulating ingredient of familiar and newer repertoire. Our soloists and guest conductors range from world famous to promising young stars." Classical Series Maestro Silverstein has created a classical concert season sure to entertain, inspire and delight. Silverstein commented, Among the works which will grace our stage are romartic orchestral show pieces such as excerpts from Wagner's "Die Goterdammerung" and Richard Strauss' "Ein Heldenle-ben.- " The season has been divided into series, each with a special theme. The Ruby Series spotlights violin and piano soloists. This series includes Elmar Oliv-eira- 's world premiere performance of Joan Tower's Violin Concerto, pianist Louis Lortie performing Mozart Piano Concerto No. 24, Utah Symphony Concertmaster Ralph Matson performing Bruch's Concerto No. 1 and the brilliant young Russian pianist Alexander Paley makes his Utah debut in Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. three 2. The Sapphire Series is the Classical Sampler. Patrons can enjoy Handel's Harp Concerto, two world by Utah composers Ricklen Nobis and Morris Rosen-zwei- premieres g, Vaughan Williams' Tuba Cm ujfiii- A xbaiaiXHcuuiiuuOnvciiu cuiu Dnnkivinn!nAtfs & phonic Dances and Symphony No. 2. As the second of three chamber performances commemorating the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death, the program includes Mozart's Adadio and Fugue in C minor, K. 546, Divertimento No. 7 in D Major, K. 205 and Divertimento in Major, K. 287. at Par-kenin- g, n, tra the with Kalichstein-Laredo-Robins- Trio. The Trio's internationally renowned soloists, Joseph Kalichstein, Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson, will make their Utah debut performing Beethoven's Triple Concerto. Other guest artists making their debut with the Utah Symphony include the young, dynamic violinist Corey Cerovsek, pianists Alexander Paley and Louis Lortie, and o Isola Jones. Two returning piano soloists are of special interest to our audiences: e Grant Johanneson and David Buechner, winner of the Bachauer International Piano Competition Gold Medal in 1984. Guest Conductors & Artists Guest conductors leading the Utah Symphony for the first time this season include Roger Nieren-berwho directs the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, and Gerard Schwarz, Seattle Symphony Orchestra music director and conductor. Returning to the podium are mezzo-sopran- Utah-nativ- g, Associate Violist Roberta will perform Der Schwanendreher on the Chamber Series and Principal Harp Konrad Nelson will perform Handel's Harp Concerto. The Utah premiere of Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto will be played by Principal Tuba Gary Ofenloch. World Premieres Three world premieres are part of the Symphony's 1991-9- 2 season. In the words of Silverstein, "The world premieres of works by composer Joan Tower as well as two Utah composers, Ricklen Nobis and Morris Rosenzweig, will bring some new and exciting American music to our repertoire." Joan Tower's Violin Concerto will be performed by master violinist Elmar Oliveira. Tower's work was jointly commissioned for Oliveira by the Snowbird Institute for the Arts and Humanities, the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University and the Meet The ComposerReader's Digest Commissioning Program. In addition, the Utah Symphony Orchestra will premiere Morris Concord. Nobis' work for mezzo-sopran- o and orchestra was commissioned by Metropolitan Opera star Isola Jones. Acclaimed opera prima donna Jessye Norman will perform with the orchestra on Sept. 25. Norman, one of the most celebrated artists of our time, appears regularly with the world's most prestigious orchestras, opera companies, and in recital in the major music centers across the globe. From the beginning of her professional career as Elisabeth in Tannhiuser with the Deutsche Opera Berlin to the recent singing of her first Kundry in a new Metropolitan Opera production of Wagner's Parsifal, Norman has always marveled audiences with her dramatic and impassioned soprano virtuosity.
