Everything he said about Coach Reid was absolutely fair aned accurate as far as we know except for one very important exception: That is that nobody expected the world to tumble down when Roger Reid took over the reins this fall. I know that everyone who knows this good man personally would take exception to that one statement. Actually we all just assumed that Roger would be the succesas that has been. This is ho obviously because in addition to being a class coach Roger is a unique human being who has a talent of making everyone he even speaks to feel special. When he talks to you he aits like there is nothing more important on the entire planet than you and what you have to say. Naturally this brings out the very best in everyone and a desire to not let Roger down. Dennis Flynn Spanish Fork Politics hurt athletes in Utah high schools Sports Editor: The politics involved in L'tah high school athletics is unfair to student athletes. Coaches at L'tah high schools seem to follow a few simple rules. If you luive played other sports, you're on. If ymi have an all star brother, you're on. If your dad comes to tryouts and practice, you're on. If you help the coach move his sister's furniture, sou're on. If sour dad has enough money to pas fur new uniforms, you're on. Being an athlete and attending three different high si bonis have given me a lot of experience with polities in Ubieties. I have also learned that politics can't be avoided. It is a natural tendency to have a prejudice in favor of someone who has been around awhile as opposed to someone fresh and new to the scene. This is completely understandable, but is it right? I have come to find that politics in L'tah high school athletics are much greater than those of other schools I have attended. I recall a professional baseball player who got cut from the baseball team at McClatchy High in Sacramento. Calif. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team one of the four years that he tried out because he wasn't athletic enough, according to the coach. Although these athletes may not have been mature and developed at the high school level, it is highly unlikely that they were not capable of playing on their high school team. Both of these men became highly respected professionals but neither were ever good enough to play on a high school team. There is something wrong when an athlete is good enough for the pros, but not for a coach in high school. The best explanation is more than likely polities. (ire.it athletes are going to waste. GEORGE It was a long game for Utah Valley Community er 51-5- 1. "That 56-5- helped." Last year, Franson averaged 21 points and 11 rebounds a game. He knows that scoring is his biggest strength. "The big thing that helped me was going against John Miller last year," Franson said. "He was probably one of the best defensive players to come out of the state." Miller, Franson's teammate last season, is now at Dixie College. Franson's biggest weakness, he said, is a lack of quickness. Franson and his teammates achieved one goal when they earned the region championship. "We'd like another shot at Bingham," Franson said. "Iast year (when the Miners won big in the state championship game) was a big disappointment." Once the season is over, Franson will consider his future. "Hopefully I'll go somewhere a year, then go on my (IDS Church) mission," Franson said. Among colleges who have shosvn an interest in him are Utah State, the University of Portland, Washington State and Southern Utah State. "They all wanted me to sign early last fall," Franson said. Franson shouldn't have any trouble getting into college. He was a National Merit semifinalist in math and scored 29 on the American College Test. He hasn't just concentrated on basketball. "I like to play golf," Franson said. "I was on the golf team. It was a good fun activity. And, I helped keep stats for the football team, trying to get involved." Franson's involvement has carried American Fork to one pinnacle of high school basketball. He would like to attain another. "I would like everyone to know-thacoach Eckles is the greatest coach anywhere," Franson said.
