The members of the Congress sent word home to their colonies telling the people to send word if they should vote to stay English colonies or declare independence. Men gathered in little towns and cities to vote. Soon, answers came back from the colonies. Each time it was the same answer, "Vote lor independence." It wusn't because he was crazy about writing he was only in second grade. But he loved to copy everything his big sister did. So when she got a journal, he says, he bugged his mum until he got one too. He didn't do much with the diary during the first few years he had it, I nit by filth or sixth grade, he was really hooked on writing in.it. He wrote about stud that happened at home and at school and collected all kinds of stuff, like gum wrappers and ticket stubs, the pages. "I could draw in it, write in it, tape stuff it was more like a in it scrupbook," Gantos says. Gantos still keeps a journal and even writes the first droll of'his books in bis X"eT Karen, and she's not at all mean. At least not anymore. "Oh, she's a cupcuke. She's sweet." Oantos says with a chuckle. So why should we thank ' her for (Juntos' stories? Hecuuse when she got a diary notebooks before typing the stories into the computer to edit and polish. But not all of Gantos' storieB are based on his journals or his boyhood adventures. In 1998, Guntos introduced us to a wonderful character, Joey I'igza, in the book "Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key." The Ixjok won several awards and was even a National Book Award finalist. Last year, Gantos won the Newbery Medal for his second Joey book, "Joey Pigza Loses Control." And not all of'Gantos' stories are about people. Gantos' first books were about a bad cat named Rotten Rulph. Ralph fans can now look for a new beginning reuder series called "Rotten Rulph's Rotten Readers." But don't worry, they're not for rotten readers! Junta Campbell |
