TAYLOR - ATLANTA (UPI) Americans face another influenza season this winter with a new virus on the scene capable of causing widespread illness. Flu activity is unpredictable but specialists say there also is a possibility, based on observations of flu activity in other countries this summer, that three strains of influenza may circulate when the cold weather hits, an event one physician at the national Centers for Disease Control called "a rar- ity." But there is good news too. A vaccine formulated to give protection against all three viruses is available, said Dr. Karl Kappus of the CDC's influenza surveillance branch. "Our experience has been that virtually every year is going to be an active flu year. We don't have any evidence of how active," Kappus said. The CDC keeps tabs on the disease through an extensive network of "sentinel" physicians and reports from hospitals. So far this fall the flu situation has been quiet. The new virus that poses the possibility of causing much illness this winter is called a name designating the place where it was first identified. is an offshoot of another flu virus, which caused much illness across the world for the past four years. The virus also is scientifically identified as the H3N2 strain, the same flu agent responsible for the 1957-5- 8 Asian flu pandemic and 1967-6- 8 Hong Kong outbreak, both of which took thousands of lives. The other two flu viruses circulating overseas this summer were the H1N1 and flu viruses. Kappus said these two viruses, along with subtypes of the H3N2 agent, caused "moderate" flu outbreaks in the United States last winter, with the Midwest having the most flu, the Southeast and West Coast reporting little, and the Northeast moderate activity. "It was an unusual year," said Kappus. "Instead of having one type of flu we had three types. That's a rarity. It was the first time we've had appreciable activity of three different subtypes of influenza." Last winter's flu season also was marked by a period when influenza and 'pneumonia deaths, which usually begin to decline when the incidence of the disease drops off, remained higher than expected into the beginning of summer. Kappus said the reason for the extended mortality period, which involved elderly people, is still under investigation. Because the flu virus changes its makeup every few years, vaccines to protect against it must be adapted to the new viruses. This year, the CDC's Advisory U al longer-than-usu- ,0 pU Reports December 1982- JUnM983 Q I I HH Sporadic Regional Levels of Flu Activity in 1 I 1 "can cause intestinal upset the marketplace," she said. "We're talking about one product. If you have the Cracker Barrel Natural Cheese, we're not talking about that." She said the product being recalled comes in a clover-shapeplastic container with a reclosable lid and a gold foil seal over the top. The recall involves only packages with a "best when used C-by" date of March 8, 1984, with a -l printed after the date. "All other products bearing the Cracker Barrel name are perfectly safe and wholesome," she said. Influenza is a respiratory ailment marked by headache, cough, muscle aches, high fever and upset stomach. In healthy people it normally runs its course in a week to 10 days. But in oldsters and those with chronic diseases it can be a serious illness. Kappus urged people at , high risk of having a serious bout with influenza to get immunized. "That includes people 65 or over and people who have chronic, severe health problems, especially respiratory problems, such as emphysema or asthma." The CDC and other health officials have long been aware, however, that many elderly people and chronically ill people do not avail themselves of the protective vaccine. Kappus said studies show of those that only about one-fift- h at risk, estimated at 42 million, get annual flu vaccinations. The CDC, in a recent statement on influenza, warned that although flu activity remains unpredictable for winter "the potential for severe impact always exists, particularly in the elderly and other high-ris- k I I I J V v -- 1 I I I U I HJ J ' d V-- fliJK33j'1 f Vl K If 1 1 tg go.oo V City Mall Orem: university Mall 224-- 777 Ogden: Ogden 7 salt Lake City: Crossroads Plaza Logan: cache valley Mall (Across from Cottonwood Mail) CreekSide Place open All Day Saturday 621-424- PROFESSIONAL groups."
