This is particularly true ol some of the lesser leading men, and aUt of character actors who wee overshadowed in the presence of stars. Kandoih Scott, for instance was kiown pretty much as a star, and that's really what he was, of course, even if he did look great in white tie and taili. A Peasore To Watch But just because he appeared B Westerns, that doesn't mean he wasn't and isn't a pleasure to watch. He holds up well over the long haul, one of the more courtly and attractive headliners in pioneer epics. was George Raft really terrific in a movie way that counts robody was ever tike him. He represented a whole era and an entire milieu, and he is easy to take in reruns. Victor Mature was known, through publicity, for his beefcake photos and his excellent bdi'd. But forget those biblical epics he appeared in and the like and get a load of him as a sympathetic tough guy in those earthy, wordly little dramas set in New York, in the Broadway scene of characters and promoters, cops. He was g wd. Plenty in good. gregarious, both both eminently bluffers, great vulnerable, they were everybody's test friends. When it came to accented character acting, Oscar and Akim Tamiroff and ' Gregory Ratoff picked a p countless movies by the bootstraps and rescued them from of countless the blindness forgotten leadng men. John Wayne, well, he was a pretty underrated performer for years too, despite being a star. Just catch him on those countless reruns, and watch a pro at wcrk. And dif you want to see a piece of star-li- k character acting that rates with the most memorable in movie history, go see him in "True Grit" I mean, it is a beautiful sight to see what he does ia this picture. I know three liberals who went to see it and came out a couple hours later as conservatives. screen. 1 Lyni Redgrave ctowa during a skit about aa inept newscaster at I p.m. m Channel 4 series, "This ia Tom Jones."
