The special is a close-ustudy p f an Arctic expedition which chan ed the map of the world. It shows the project from the planning stage, through its 109 days on the polar ice during the Artie winter and spring, to its conclusion at the world's north- coast, in Greenland, where the party took celestial observations which have led to significant revisions in the map of this Danish possession. The story, told in the ver, personal terms of the individuals who made the journey, was produced by Stuart Schulberg and written by Schul-ber- k and Richard Victory. The five man expedition headed hy David Humphreys, an Australian navigator and former English instructor at Skidmore included Phursumba College Sherpa, a professional mountain-climbe- r and survival expert from India ;Leif Lundgaard, a Norwegian veteran of three polar expeditions; Dick Mickel-son- , a young photographer and outdoorsman from Minneapolis; and Ken Poste, a cameraman and Arctic film specialist. In and voice-ove- r comments, Prince Pliilip, who has visited the Galapagos and taken a great personal interest in their preservation narrates the history of the islands. He also describes their unique wildlife and the remarkable juxtaposition of tropical volcanic lava and extremely cold water that permits flamingos and penguins to survive side by side. Aside from their strange and fascinating animal life, the Galapagos have supplied a significant footnote to the history of mankind through the writings of Charles Darwin. The area was explored in 1835 by Darwin, then a natural one-hou- cx ist, and wh.it he observed there became the basis for his theory of evolution, published .'10 jears later in "The Origin of the Species."
