Show Candidates Must Be Video Wise These Days -- By RICK DU BROW HOLLYWOOD UPI Few - JIIIIL ryy in contenders this year's presidential race indicate they have much grasp of how to use television to present themselves at their most atractive. It is simply the mastering of a necessary technique. Curiously, although the new should candidates be more polished than their predecesof some sors, the past presidents seemed to understand more than the newcomers how to put their best foot forward on the video. It is pret'.y generally conceded that no one in politics had a firmer command of television technique than the late John Kennedy. He and the medium seemed to be born for each other, politics aside. Uniquely, former President Dwight Eisenhower, despite his occasional problems in speaking off the cuff, had some sort of common personal magic a touch, if you will and video caught it and transmitted it. Truman Does Well Another former President, Harry Truman, also surprised the experts by registering forcefully and succinctly on television, although he came from an older time. And Barry Goldwater, although he lost the presidential race, came across even to many of those who disagreed with him with considerable impact. What seems strange, in fact, is that President Johnson, wiio defeated Goldwater, is much JU. o -- o i RONALD REAGAN well to bone up on i iiatfi to how their techniques on television. We know that they all project some very good and effective impressions on video but television campaigning reAnd so, quires setting aside personal politics and individual ability, here are their problems as video personalities at least to this viewer: Kennedy, Humphrey Kepititiiius Both Robert Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey occasionally tend to be a bit repetitious, and sometimes speak too much at length in reply to questions. They would be wise to rely more on brevity, as did the late President Kennedy. Maybe it's the American western tradition, n but the man of a few words seems to have the most impact on television.
