Judging from interviews and observations during my week visit to China this summer, girls as well as boys vie for the chance to join forces with the PLA. For most young people, the PLA is not a lifetime career, but rather a time to "steel and temper," a rite of passage into revolutionary civilian society. Dern finally surfaced from his underground stint, left the realm of misfits and began working in A films. He had parts in "They Shoot Horses Don't They?" "Drive, He Said," "Cowboys," "Silent Running" and his most recent, "The King of Marvin Gardens." And the only dastardly deed he had to perform in these films was to shoot down John Wayne in "Cowboys." Dern won the National Society of Film Critics' award for Best Supporting Actor for the portrayal of a basketball coach in "Drive, He Said." "That was the first time I played an establishment person and the crowd was for me," says Dern. "But I couldn't have Mom go to see it. It was R rated." His mother, who died shortly after he received his award, always referred to her son as "studying to be an actor." Dern explains, "To my mother, if you weren't number one, you weren't an actor." She would always ask ne why I didn't get roles like Spencer Tracy. Or she'd say, 'How come you're not in Walt Disney films? They make such nice films.' " There he was, just another struggling young actor. Bruce Dern quit school, the University of Pennsylvania, when his track coach ordered him to shave the long sideburns he had grown for a play. His father, a member of the Board of Trustees, backed the coach. So Bruce Dern quit school, studied acting, then went to New York City and Broadway. But like other struggling young actors, Bruce his Dern had a friend great-uncla famous poet, had a play about to open on Broadway. He landed a few parts on Broadway and then went out to the sordid marketplace to make a name for himself.
