Sport and charity will be happily combined in the proltereu billiard i r, contest. ., The Tlicspian Association, A very agreeable time was spent on Saturday evening in the Fourth WBrd school house by those who could gain admisbion in witnessing the Thesuian Association lieri'orm "Ire-- . land As It Is," and "The Rough Diamond." At 7:.'J0, the house was crowded, and at 8 not a seat or standing place could le found; con. sequent'y, msny had to turn away. The performance, both artistically and financially, was a success. In the first piece, Mr. Geo. G. Taylor, as "Ragged Pat," gained the favor of the audience with his eccentricities. Mr. John T. Smith, as old 'Dan O'Carohn," received the sympathies of all by the splendid conception of his part; his voice, however, is too clear to allow of his acting a genuine and old man; but his "make-up- '' acting, on this occasion, made recoms Mr. A. D. pense tor the deficiency. Chambers as "Neil O'Carolan," acted well. Mr. P. T. Wright, as "Conor O'Fiaherty," sustained the good reputation he made in the first performance of this company. Mr. Angus'!. Wright makes a splendid Frenchman, au excellent svvell, and can also impersonate the hero and gentleman, lie could improve by speaking a little louder, should he ever repeat Mr. S. T, "Monsieur Voyage." as the middleman, "Seps Whitaker, timus Stone," looke i and acted the villain, and in the part succeeded bo well thf t he failed to gain any sym" pathy from the audience, which, by the way, is a high compliment to the actor under such circumstances; his "make-upwas excellent. "Slang," his tool for evil, was well taken by Mr. J. G.Stratford whose appearance and acting were good. Mr. Moroni Poulter sustained the character of "Magistrate" with necessary dignity and ability, while Mr. J. Burton as "Gassoon" was good. Miss Jessie Penrose, as "Judy O'Trot," was a decided success, Her conception of the character was ex s, as celleiit and her acting of the house the frequent applause bore !witne&o. Though good in both. Miss Penrose appears to be more at home in comedy than in Miss Martha Jackson as tragody. "Honor," and Miss Belle Ballantyne as "Florence," took their parts well. In the farce, Mr. J. Barton was in his element as "Lord Plato." Mr-A- . D. Chambers, as "Sir William Evergreen," made a fine appearance; this gentleman is especially suited for such par's, and his effort' was well received. Mr. Taylor, as 'Cap-tai- n Blenheim," was evidently out of his line. Ml Whitaker as "Joe" was perfect ia appearance; his dialect was rustic enough, but he some what overdid the matter a number of the best pomts being lost on the audience by their inability to understand him. Miss Nellie Dana as "Margery," did some good acting; her vivacity and Bprightliness was quite suitable I to the part; the young lady gives promise of becora Miss ina an excellent comedienne. Matilda Ballantyne,as "Lady Plato," was successful in her part, but she could improve by speaking with a slower and steadier voice. The scenery was well painted, and helped the representation material ly. Watkins' band discoursed some excellent music. The association de serve the encouragement of all lsv era of innocent amusement. Chambers, on Fifth Street, is al ways well supplied with the latest , publications. Messrs. II. Woolnbk and W. We don't wish herp to enter into the reasons of this rather unexpected and unwelcome step, but our readers can bo assured that neitherjin a lack ofcfficiency nor in a remissness of punctuality is to be found the least cause of Mr. Joseph Hall's departure Irom an office which he has filled to the fullest satisfaction of the public. When, a year ago,he reentered the jrce of which he bad acquired a previous ep.ience oMong years, the public in general wrehfghly gratified, kudwiug the gentleman's imperturbable urbanity his never flagging zeal and unim peachable probity in the discharge of his responsible duties, The public certainly regret Mr. Jts, Hall's retirement with a sentiment whose unanimity cannot be but gratifying and houoviug to such a public servant who has never been found ranti- 10,500 lbs. The Black foot lUguter reeords the following incident from the social life of that "lively" town: On Thursday evening a dance was given at the Star restaurant, at which there were over thirty couples. Trouble was seen to be brewing from the time the dancing commenced, but everything was quiet until about two o'clock in the morning, when Hiram Ax t elf, better known as " Whiter" came in, considerably under the influence of liquor, and asked someone to dance with him, but was refused. It seems that he had been refused once or twice before, and opon this refusal pulled out a pistol which he swung around and said with an oath if he could not dance, no one else should, several parties jumped up and caught him andt succeeded in getting the pistol away from him, not until it had been VJischarged however, the ball striking Mrs. Geo. Snyder in the right shoulder, glanc ing up from the shoulder blade it lodged in the flesh above the arm. Axtell was arrested and taken before Judge Montgomery, who bound him over on the sum ol $3,000 to appear before the next grand jury. From what we can learn from reports that are circulated, he had secured the pistol for the purpose of shooting Reuben Still, who was acting floor manager, Failing to secure bonds he was taken to Mai ad this morning where hi will remain in jail until court meets.
