Thomas a Kempls. The people of the little towu of Kempen, on the plain of the Rhine, near Cologne, are just now engaged in celebrating the anniversary of the birth of Thomss Hanimerken, or Hammerlein, called Malleolus in Latin, who adopted the name of his native place and made it famous all the world over. His father wa9 an industrious mechanic, and his mother was the viilag schoolmistress, from whom her children must have inherited a turn for letters, for his brother John was prior of the Augustiaian monastery of Mount'St. Agnes, near Zwolle,in the Netherlands, when Thomas became a novice there in the year 1400. He distinguished himself in the beautiful art of copying manuscripts, and left among other evidences of his industry the complete work of Saint Bernard, a Missal, and a. Bible in four folio volumes.' upon which he spent the labor of fifteen year. He wag, like so many other monks of his. time,.- - famous for producown as ing works s;of a ...his well as . for reproducing those of others, and he has been almost universally credited with the authorship of the De Imiiaiime Chrwti or ''Following of Chnst," which next to the Bible itself, has been read by more people and in more languages than any other single book. Five hundred different editions are shown in a modern eollection in Colofrne, and it ii supposed that in all not legs than 1,800 editions have been printed. To these mnst be added a large number of manuscripts mostly written before, but some after, the invention of printing, and these appear, like the inscription above the cross, in'Hebrew,' Greek, and Latin. There ia 1n the Bourgogne Library at Bfu8elj a welUknown manuscript, chiefly on parchment, but wiih a few leaves of paper, contaiuing the Dc Imilatione, written by Tuonias a Kfmpis himself. The colophon is as follows: Flnitus et eompletut - amto donuni M CCCCXLL per. manus j'ratris thomac Kempia in monte sandae Agicetis propc, Zmollis '"Elided aud completed iu the year of the Lord 1441 by the hand of brother Tho uas Kempis, at the Mount of Saint Agues, netr Zwolle." This was befonp the time oi'title pages, and about'' ten years before there was any printing villi movable types; but there was a table prefixed to the codex which showed the treatises therein contained, at:d as to all of them, except the De no question has ever been was the author raised that of them as well as the transcriber. There is extant a manuscript bear-in- g the name of "Master Thomas, ef Mount St. Agnes," as author, dated a early as 1425. later, in 1400, another1 manuscript copy credited the auihorship to John Gerson, Chancellor of University of Taris; and thus began a controversy, which is coatmued ts ottf.own day. AsKeuapis died in 1471, ab the age of 92, and the most ancient, printed copy of the De Imitativne the one by Ginther Zainer, at Augsburg is supposed to have appeared three years before that event, although it is without date. This and twenty-on- e other editions which appeared in the course of tbe laet thirty years of the fifteenth centuty bear the as author, while name of nut mote than twd printed in the same period bear the name of Ger son. These are all id Latin. The firit English edition of De Imitations was ''imprvnted.M London in Fleto Sire;! at the eigne of tbi Sonne Jay Wynkyn de Word in 4 Goth," in the year 1502, with the following title: ."A .fall devoute and of--ye Imytacion and aoitely- - treatise blessed Lyfe of our ye Folowynge most inercifull Saviour Cryst. Compiled it 4tervjf the right worshyp-lul- l doctor master Johnn Gerson: aud translated into Englissh the MsD II, by May-ete- r yere of our lorde Wy llyam ' Atky nson', Doctor of Divynyte,'' etc. Between the date of this edition and the close of the sixteenth century there were no less than fifty editions of the De Imilatione in English, comprising a great number of different translations, and since that time as many as a dozen different translations have appeared, been almost and the editions ihave p " ' ' ' Without number.' Although in England itself the circulation of the De Imilatione has been second onlyUo, hat of the unin"Pilgrim's Progress" among of settlers the early books, spired New England seem for some reason to have held the work in poor esteem, for the censors in Boston denied their imprimatur to it in 1667. Something over a hundred years later, however, it was the very first book issued by the Methodist Book Concern, at Philadelphia, in 1795. - Greis's MLCELLA NEO Flower AcatJBT MISCHLZANEQUS Groceries, Flour and Woolen Goods.
