One of the natives of a little village took it into his head that he would back against nature; and so, stealing his way into a neighboring barnyard, he stealthily, and maliciously, painted a white cow red. (Horrible man.) In a few days three or four children were taken sick in the village; doctors disagreed. No one eould tell how the youngsters were afflicted. The question of water works for the city has been and still is the ob ject most interesting to the pro perty owners of the populous parf of the city. ' Let me suggest a plan and make a few figures in regard to the same. The water can be taken from Weber River, taken out at Devil's Sate and run into a natural reservoir on the bench, north-ea- st of the city, and from that point the city can be supplied. Besides there is at least 6,400 acres of land lying below the line of this canal that can be watered from it. Out of that 6,000 Ogden City owns 600 acres that is worthless without water, and with water is worth from $100 to $300 per acre. There are individuals, who own lots that have water rights by paying $2.50 or $3 per acre yearly, nearly all of which would give $15 o $10 for a perpetual water light. We will say that fifty of these persons give $20 each in labor or cash, Let which would make $1,000. Ogden City give the same $10 per acie for tLeir 640 acres, $6,4O0,thfn the land owners along the canal would willingly pay $5 per acre and some would pay more (I would give $10 per acre for 170 aores). There are 5,760 acres at least, at $5 per acre, $28,800. Well then, the business men of the eity would willingly give enough to buy the piping to carry the water from the reserveir. If not, 1st the canal company lav them and charge for the water. This figuring shows that there can be obtained in cash and labor on said canal, $36,200. Now then, what is the probable cost of said canal? The length will be about twenty miles, and this gives us nearly $2,000 per mile, which will more than build it. I think there is a part of it which can be built for $500 per mile. Now all we want is some one or set of men to go ahead with this thing, and in another year we can have the best water works in this country, and supply a large tract of desert land with water. Let us hear from you all along the line. it. ii. . Yours, dec. Oodek, Feb. 2nd, 1880. Relentless Death. At nine o'clock on Monday even- .a ing tbere passed, away irom mis earth one of its sweetest creatures Mrs. Martha Walker, wife of Joseph Walker, and daughter of Bishop Christopher Layton, of Kaysville. The departed was only nineteen, years of age, yet she had from child hood possessed the affections and admiration of a host of friends. As a musician she was well known, but her purity of heart, gentleness of demeanor and earnest and consist ent endeavor to make happy those around her attracted every one to her. She died within a week after giving birth to a child, which will be taught to reverenoe the memory of the mother thus untimely taken away before she had time to pour out her affections upon her offspring. Scarcely six hours after the above mentiened sad event, Mrs. Flint, also of Kaysville, died of a similar illness. The two children were born at about the same time, and the al most simultaneous deaths of the mothers have created a widespread sorrow and sympathy in Kaysville The celebrated comedy entitled "The Honeymoon," was performed on the stage, Saturday evening, in an effective manner, before a full house. The costumes of the performers were made in good style and were rich in appearance. The cast of characters was as follows: Duke Aronza, E. H. Peirce, Mock Duke, H. E. Bowring; Lampedo, P. Baird; Rolando, E. A. Box; Count Montal-bin- , A. H. Snow; Balthazar, P. F. Madsen; Lopez, David Burt; Juliana, Armeda S. Young; Valante, Lydia M. Snow; Zamora, Virgenio Snow. The parts taken by said ladies and gentlemen were brilliantly oxecuted and admired by all present. It i binted that this play will be performed by the company, at Ogdtfn, some day in the near future. Hans Jensen, the unfortunate man who figured so conspicuously in a recent trial in Ogden, and who has been an inmate of the county asylum as insane, for about 11 davs, breathed his last on Saturday morning at 3.30, and a coroner s inquest wits held upon his body on the same dry, in which the effects of insanity were stated in the jurors, verdict as the cause of his death. He was buriedon the 2d, quite a number of the citizens following him to his final resting plice in the cemetery. Rev. S. L. Gillespie officiated on the occasion. Dr. (). D. Cass, under whose treatment the patient was placed, said he had never in the east or the west, seen a worse case in any asylum, and to allevi te his distressing convulsions was nearly all the Dr. could do for him, as death was inevitable.
