The dancers were late in congregating, it being after nine o'clock when King Carnival (F. A. Shiells) formed in line and started the entertainment with a grand inarch. That worthy was seated in a miniature chariot, to which were attached two gaily caparisoned goats, and the ''following" made up a picture grotesque and motley enough to suit the most capricious variety a hundred More than fancier. couples were present, and every conceivable character, from the sovereign to the serf, the fairy to the Afri can and the angel of light to the demon of darkness, was represented on the floor, each excellently dressed and all enjoying themselves to the utmost. The best sustained characters on the male side were Jno. G. Earll as a Quaker, his phisique being admir ably adapted to the character; Sam Murray as a Dutch Uirl did so well that he was not even suspected, and a ripple, of surprise ran through the crowd when his mask was removed; Win. Budge well represented a as a Fifth Ward Dem ocrat, J. Hogan was perfection, and if not the very best sustained character, it was at least m the front rank; Mr. Mcintosh, represented a Yankee; Chas. Tyree, Old Virginia; N. Richmond, Mophistopheles; A. B. Hilliker, Johnny Lancaster; A. Buch-milleM. Budge, Scotcwman; Court Fool; C. Duchaneaii, Japanese; W. Van Dorn, What-I- s It; J. M. Dee, Claude Melnotte; Odell & Wright, Spanish Brigands; besides a host whose names and characters we were unable to learn. On the part of the ladies, Night was very appropriately represented by Mrs. II. M. Bond; Lightning, by Mrs. C. L. Peebles, was a skillfully devised costume; Miss May Bowring was charming as a Shepherd ess; Mrs. W. B. Doddridge represented a Gipsy; Mrs. II. C. Phillips, Fancy; Miss Rosa Dana, a Flower Girl; Mrs. Mcintosh, Pink Domino; Miss E. Murphy, French Peasant; Miss Abbie Lees, Pink Domino; Miss E. Sadlier, Brittany Peasant; Mrs. J. M. Dee, Autumn; Miss MattieMello- ney, Folly; Mrs. Buchmiller, Night; Mrs. Wm. Cook, Winter; Mrs. E. Goodfellow, Stars and Stripes; Mrs. Snyder, Dolly Varden; Mrs. Odell, Spanish Lady; Mrs. G. J. Wright, Queen Elizabeth; and many others. At 12 o'clock, carriages were at the door, to convey the guests to the Keoney House to supper. The ma jority of those in attendance pro ceeded to that resort as fast as places in the vehicles could be obtained, and on arrival found a feast fit for the gods, or words to that effect, spread out before them. It is useless to at of the viand-- , enumeration an tempt set out before the guests of the Conductor's Ball at the Kcency House last evening; our space is too limited ai.d our time too phort; it was worthy the reputation of the house and the enterprise of those who projected and conducted the entertainment. Not until the small hours of morning did the merriment of the occasion relax in the least. Everybody was so thoroughly amused that phys ical weariness itself had to intervene to bring tho proceeding. to a close. And when the dancers departed it was with a sense of gratification at tho handsome m uiiier in which they had been entertained, with a general verdict on the part of all that the Conductors' Brotherhood, among other things, know how to get up a ball. The floor was ably managed, all the committees were in their jla-ce- s and did their parts towards promoting the pleasure of their patrons; and, to sum it up in a few words, the affair was a genuine success. UN BALLO EN MASCHERA. al r, Hal-ston'- 7:3-- y y y ,., for the Jbctiok Walton by Egai Only a baby! only a lily nipped in of death! the bud by the frost-worbroken and gathered by the great reaper before its petals have unclosed to become soiled by even the breath of sin transplanted to bloom forever in the garden of heaven Only a baby! only a mother'sdarling! gone out from her life taking with it all the brightness that has crowned her with joy during its short life, compelling her to yield up with its bitter breath all the sweet hopes which she has cherished, since first it opened its innocent eyes upon this world. Only a baby! only her cherished, her idolized tenderly child, for whom she had woven such a bright tissue of dreams, whose earth ly future she Juki planned with so much pride. All her bright castles of hope demolished, all faded out forever, and now there is nothing left but for her to put away the little dresses which her hands had fash ioned with so much taste and pride; and to tenderly lay aside the play things and baby treasures, made sa cred by the touch of those little fin gers, which in life seemed never still, but are now folded so quietly, and peacefully across tho breast. How cold and empty appear to her the words of comfort, which kind friends utter? How the pale lips try to frame the words, "God's will be done" while all her rebellious heart and soul cry out against it, und shecan think of nothing, say nothing, pray for nothing except: "Open the pearly gates 'cross death's sea, And send my darling back to me' Only a baby! Only another angel in heaven; how sweet the thought that there in that bright world, the little birdling just flown from its earthly nest, has found a safer haven of rest, where the little tongue that would have lisped mania, will forever he attuned to heavenly praise. The sweet baby face and smile are hid away from earthly sight forever; yet in another and brighter world, the little hands are taught to touch the harp with a golden string, and no sin nor pain can ever mar the Innocent Beauty. Although it is hard, only a mother knows how hard, just at first to believe it is all for the best, yet, in after years, when the first knen poignancy of grief shall have worn away, she will be able to lift the veil, and looking away through the misty shadows, see why it is deemed by a mercilul rather to be all for the best. Better the heavenlykiugdom, Than riches or earthly crown; Better the early morning flight than one when the sun is down. Better an empty casket 1 han jewels besmirched with sin; Safer than these without the fold Are those that have entered in. k Improvement. We were gratified to notice yesterday but very feW people under the influence of liquor, to see no fighting, and to hear but little profanity. The public streets were not crowded by riotous, turbulent people; the most delicate lady need ha,ve had no fe;tr of being jostled or insulted. We earnestly hope that better days are dawning for Ogden that our young men and boys are improving in manners, and attaining refinement. May no occasion arise which will neces sitate a change ol opinion on our part. We don't wish to combat the people of this town, but wo do wl.--h and intend to assail t!ie evils which we find existing here; but as we have been profuse in criticism of late, we are pleased now to offer this tribute of praise to our citizens. No better order could have been maintained in any city than was observed on the streets .of Ogden yesterday, tho day before New Year's. In connection with the foregoing we inform the public of our intention to hereafter secure police court reports as full and complete as the officials will furnish. Wo will publish tho names of all persons against whom criminal charges are sustained in the justices' courts; and wiil endeavor fo give to our readers a statement of all cases. We do not decide upon this action for the sake of injuring the reputation of any person; but tho action of the courts is public property, and if people don't wish to receive newspaper notices for their offences, they should keep from under the judicial rod.
