Herald's Hamburg: ,Captain Schwenzer, of the romme:-aniapublishes in a newspaper of thin city a statement of events relating to the catastrophe of the midnight of November 25th. lie says: "When the steamer sank', I was sucked down into the vortex. 1 did not have a life belt, and only gained the surface after a desperate struggle, when, most fortunately, I encountered a spar, aided by which I floated for an hour and a half. I seemed to be utterly alone on the surface of the water until at last the lights of a steamer, that proved to be the City of Amsterdam, came in sight. I shouted and was heard. A boat was sent, nd I was taken on board the steames in a state. My watch stopped at 12:03, thus I am abbe to fix the time exactly. C.iief oflicer Fianzen was on deck d stributin." the life belts until withi i a few seconds of the sinking of the Foiiim ian a. Doc tor Schncid ng, the surgeon, was also distributing life belts. Chief Engineer lleliiu assured me, soon after the collision, that the steam had been shut off in consequence of there being so much water in the engine room. that nothing could be. done. Second officer Fokkes was on deck to the last, and declined to enter the boats, refusing to leave his captain. Third officer Ztrrow was at his post till the s ilking of the ship, firing rockets. Thus it will be seen that the first engineer, the second and third officers and the surgeon perish ed while doing their duty. As for myself, I say nothing, only that I was saved bv a miracle." Schwenzer has been appointed to the command The of the steamer Westphalia. Captain will remain for the present at Hamburg on account ot his serious illness, growingout of the great shock to hie jiervous svste.m. His physi cians encourage the hope that he will soon be out once more; restored to health. The captain details the events following the collision which occurred while he left the bridge for a- - few moments to visit the chart house, in order to examine his course, lie exonerates hrst omeer Fronxen from blame respecting the, conduct of the officers and crew after the collision. The captain continues "I can only speak in terms of the highest praise. Jly orders were car ried out calmly and effectually. The report that some of the crew attempt ed to save their personal property, and neglected to attend to the proper equipping of the boats, or to the safety of passengers, is, according to my observation, utterly untounaeu. Into tho last boat that pulled away 1 saw a passenger hurl an tron cornered cotter clear lrom tne ueck, knocking a hole in the boat a bottom and en dan goring the life of every passenger on the cratt. This rules Hendricks out, because Indiana is counted sure for the Denioeracy, and Thurinan comes to the front again because Ohio is un certain. It also leads to talk of Pennsylvania Wallace and revives the hopes of Tilden's friends that if lie fails to get the first place on the ticket, Clarkson N. Col. Piatt also publishes several of these letters of Minister Mason in his own paper but accompanies them with other letters and explanations making four columns of defense, lie takes the ground that Mason, at the date of bringing the accusation against him was suffering from softening of the brain caused by a stroke of apoplexy and had been turned against him, by malicious, lying enemies. He also cites previous letters of Mason and Pierre Soule highly complimenting him, and refers to tho passage by Congress of a bill for his relief in the following year and the committee's report accompanying that bill as being a complete vindication of his official conduct.
