Chief of the Foreign Mail Division and published in the Juue number of the Post Office Gazette : On and after the 1st of July, uniform rates will be levied and collected in tb United States on correspondence to and from all countries embraced in tie Mold Tom figure two-third- - County. In Contra County, the peuplo exj,ec9 god erop of wheat itn J barTey, and so as to other parts of the State, but in many places of crops will be limited. In yiew the largo number of persons who hare gone to that State this year, it is a source of gratification that the prospect is fair for a plentiful supply of breadstuff, for, as a great many persons hare doubtless reached that State without means, much suffering and want would be likely to exist should the crops baTe failed. While treating on the prospect for crops the present year we wish to rofer to a doubt, which is of peculiar interest to all who may havo their ycs turned to the golden state as a future home, and with a view of in agricultural pursuits, and in this connection desire to express icfiuiijation for the eandor of the San Fraorisco Chronicle, from whose col usees we gleaa the substance of Costa en-agr- whftt we print below: Chronicle expresses the opinthe eud it may prore, ion 'that the original, Spanish possessor Vftftat country ittd a more correct idea of its adaptation to agriculture thai their American successors, it ays that the old settlers never California au agricultural rather the reverse, and but country, assured the first Anierieaus who they came there that it would be impossible to carry on agriculture to any great extent. But they regarded it as a pastoral paradise. Flocks and herds were the great reliance of the people,3 and they" attempted only to raise small patche? of grain. The State did not raise grain enough to feed its population until 1850, after that the high prices stimulated ventures, until a large amount was produced in certain localities, still the Chronicle says, "it was found to be a fixed fact that, except within a narrow area, her soil was liable to drouth and her crops to frequent failure." If these things are so, and if what we quote below bo true, we think people who are well of in other places would do well to pause before pulling up stakes and rushing off to California, the Chronicle further diafc ia con-idere- d ney in the Supreme Court of Utah. Prof. 0. C. IV. Wheeler, ef the U. 8, Geological Survey party, was at Salt Lake yesterday. The Herald is anxious to know whether the good people of Salt Lake are to bare a glorious Fourth of July or no, and ia desirous that the people should unite in a celebration af that day, should it arms. We hope they will have a Fourth of July and glorious celebration as well; and would htmbly suggest to the good people of that burg" to- lay aside every weight and "the sine which do so easily beset them," and by ene grand union of effort show to the world that they have not "degenerated," but rather that the fires of 1778 still smoulder in the bosoms of the people of 1875. Let them blaze! Preparations are about being made at Salt Lake, says the News, for a Qrad Jubilee on the 24th July. An organization of a company under the name of the "Deseret Silk Associa tion," was made at Salt Lake City, on Monday. The officers elected are as fol lows: President, Zinah D.
