Show tlST Municipal. Charlea W. Fen rune. Editor and tluiusw" Henajer. 0(JIE. , ; - ' UTAH. Even!;, April 17. 1875. Saturday SECRETS TO BE REVEALED. With all the boasted knowledge of the nineteenth century, the world is Btill in much ignorance concerning the earth on whiih we live. Even its surface has not yet been entirely explored.' We know nothing of the polar regions. It is true they are enelosed by barriers of ice, and the rigors of climate are yet stronger than the endurance and power of man. But there in Africa, whose interior is yet a terra incognita, It isn't ice that stops explorations in that uuknown region. However, there is a prospect that this vaet conntry will not remain much longer in its present seclusion. The labors of Livingstone have done Much to stir up a desire to penetrate into its mysteries, and various expeditions have been organized to open Africa to the civilized world. . Two very important expeditions hayo $een! inaugurated under the di- rections of the Khedive if Egypt They are commanded by Americans. The Khedive has traveled in Europe. He has seen and heard many things whieh have enlarged his views and extended" his knowledge of human nature. His selection of Americans to lead such enterprises shows that he has Dot traveled for nothing. One of these" expeditions is commanded by Col. Sparrow Purdy, who is as sis ted by Lieut.1 Col.' ' Mason;' the other is in charge of Col. Colston, assisted by Lieut."" Col. Heed, all of them Americans. They will vjsit the provinces near the equator, make surveys ofhe adjacent country, civilize the natives, extend the vory trade, work against the slave traffic, and i'reparetho way for a 'general iogW the interior. open- - The CUj Couaeil met. p adjournment, April 16th, 1875, Major Lester J. When the alarm .was given however, but few could hear it, or discover the slide that traveled quietly one mile and a half in six minutes. Some men had dug holes in the snow from 7 to J5 feet deep.and worked in them to the last, unconscious of their perilous situation, and when the slide was almost on them it was with the greatest difficulty that they reached the surface, having to climb perpendicular walls of snow, no steps having been made to lead them out. When a place of safety hud been reached a great excitement prevailed for a few minutes to ascertain, who, if any, were lost. Only twenty men could be counted. But soon all was bright, as the missing map. was discovered coming slowly down the hill. ' ' ' 1 ' Respectfully, iron only Figures are Jacts. Figures never le. So it is generally stated and ae- knowledged. But if figures never err, peopla frequently do in the use of them, , Mistakes in computation make great confusion in business and frequently bring disaster. But the miscalculations of prophetic mathe . matioians; have ruined as well as J.deceivedmultitudes mentally and. socially. . The latest of these figure prophets is ode M L. Alford, of Illinois. lie is sure ho is right. Miller was sure, too. And so have Wen most of the preachers of! the world's, .disso lution who weave their theories out of the weft of mystic Bible figures and the warp of scriptural signs. Al- f rd says, "Christ is coming in April, 1875.' It ouly requires two weeks time to number Alford among the false , prophtts. Still Alford may be a good man only mistaken, and that term maybeaVittle harsh when applied t him. .Nevertheless his proihecx will fail, aud so will the attempts of all of that class of would-b- e seen who try to wive a pioU.ui Jocktd up m the nnud f Deity, by jtdui Jg U ngurei aud computing limi auu - Home,.
