The remnant of th OsageB fled to their reservation, abandoning their camp and other property, which were taken by the whites. Captain Kicker, the leader, reported th affair as an attack by Indians, and rumor soci enlarged it into an Indian war along the border, with the Osage nation raiding upon the settlers of Kansas. The OoTenor called out the militia, and telegraphed the Secretary of War for a supply of arms and ammunition to be issued to the citizens of that State. Subsequent information discovered the fact that the Indians attacked were entirely peaceable and friendly, and that the militia were a number, of persons who were skirmishing on their own account, and were afterward organized into a militia company, with Hicker sis Captain, whose commission antedated this massacre, so as to" call it an act of war. These lacts, heretofore reported, are now verified by a statement of a member of the militia of whom' the Probate Judge of the county says under his seal, "He is an old resident f Barbour county, and a respectable and reliable man." He says that he went himself, unattended and unarmed, inte the camp of these Indians the day before they were murdered, was well treated, and' saw no indications whatever of h st.litj. He adds that the Indians did not fire first, nor at all; that they were well known to be on a peaceable hunting expedition; that the four Indians weie killed aiter they had been captured, and when they were entirely hi lpless, by the ordr of Captain Ricker, anJ at the', time of his raid upon the ludiatis, tho paities whs have since styled themselves Kansas militia, of wh mi he was one, were not ordered into service. It is a significant tact that the same mail which bore this information to the Indian office also c ntain-e- d a certified copy of resolutions of the Legislature ol Kans ts condeumin the policy in the nmnagemeut of the Indiaus, and recommeuding that the Indian Bureau be turaedove" to Y.
