Charles Andersou, a Sweedish sea captain, had been fifteen years on the seas, and had visited all the known continents and many of the islands. He might be presumed to have seen a good deal of the world and learned something of men. He had a fancy for rough diamonds, and possessed quite a collection ol them gathered from India, Brazil, Africa and other diamond bearing countries. He purchased and traded for them during his voyages, and intended either to sell or have them cut for his own use as occasion might require. He had, moreover, a and sleeve large diamond buttons and a valuable watch and chain. The captain was a pretty picture on the street. Some weeks ago he went to New York and, bidding farewell to the ocean, he married and proposed to himself a life of case and eecial content. . He had sared some money and had a good many diamonds whieh could be readily turned into cash as his needs demanded. He projected a bridal trip to Europe ami it became necessary to sell some diamonds preliminary to the pleasure voyage. He put about $15,000 worth of diamonds in his pocket and went out one day. He bent his steps towards the establishment of a diamond deal er. Arrived, and going up a flight of stairs into the broker's apartment, he was met about midway of the stairs by a smiliug-faceyoung man who asked him if he wanted to buy The captain said he diamonds. wanted to sell some. The young niau then said that the dealer was out and would not bo iu till five o'clock. He was his clerk and told him to call at that hour. The captain promised to call and icfc lie went to the house of his wife's parents to enjoy the society there in the intermediate hours. In due time he was agayi on the street wending his way towards the diamond broker's. He heard askarp "Hallo" behind him and turned to look. He saw the fmilinjr clerk of the stairway, and with him a fashionably attired pretty young woman. The clerk introduced the woman to Captain Anderson as his wife, and asked if he was going up to the office. The captain said he was. The clerk then said if tVie captain would wait until he took his wife home he would accompany him. Would he walk a square or two with him to his residence? The captain agreed to this and walked with the couple. On the way the woman took from her pocket a little pasteboard box, and from the box a which she put innocently into her mouth. She handed the box to the young man and asked if he'd have one. He put ene blandly in his mouth, and then said "Captain will you have one?" He partook of the contents of the box and did eat. They had just passed out of the crowd of Broadway. The young man said his hou?e was only a square off now. The captain began to get dizzy and stagger. The woman said to the captain: "You have a little black or cigar ash on your nose; let me wipe it off." She threw her handkerchief gently across his face, and that's the last thing he remembers until he woke up in a perfectly black, damp hole, burning with thirst. He stumbled around the cavern until he came to what felt like a door. He knocked, the door was opened, and two men appeared with handkerchiefs tied across their brews and falling like veils over their faces. The captain asked for a drink of water. They inquired if he would not prefer a cup ef coffee, he said he would, and thry gave him the coffee, with the gentle adno:tioo that if he made any He noise they would kill him. promised to be as quiet as a mouse, drank the coffee, and his keepers closed the dungeon door upon him. Then another period of unconsciousness came upon him, and he remembered two men shaking him. They tied his hands with cords, hung a wet handkerchief over his face, saturated his shirt bosom with some liquid, and led him into the open air He was 60on again oblivious to all surroundings. When he again woke np he was standing supporting himself against a fence which surroundHe was scarcely ed a new building. b!a to wa!k, and his idfac wfre con-- 1 Bhirt-stud- fused. It seemed a long time since he had started for the diamond broker's offiee. That was Monday. At first he could not tell what had hapThen the various incipened. dents of lis adventure came faintly into view, but he did not still comprehend them. A policeman thought he was very drunk, and was about to club him into soberness, when he discovered the man did not smell of whiskey, but very strongly of chloroform. The captain now felt a desire to know the time of day, and first dis?overed that his watch was gone, llis diamond studs were gone; his $15,000 worth of rough diamonds were gone from his pocket. It was Wednesday afternoon. The whole truth flashed upon" him, but the tracks of this singular robbery are all covered, so far as the police and detectives have yet gone.
