On Thursday afternoon Abram Dates, a fartuer living on the Salt Point road, while standing in front of the grocery store of John McLean in this city, was accosted by a stranger, who gave his name as Stevens, and claimed to be a resident of Conn. He told Mr Dates he was in want of a farm, and inquired whether there were any for Bale in his neighborhood. Mr. D. gave him what information he could, and during the conversation the stranger mentioned the name of Almansen Irish and several others iu that neighborhood, asking particularly about the quality of the land, the character of the property, etc., ending by asking Mr. Dates to let him ride out as far as Mr. Irish's. Mr. D. consented, and the two started off. Oa the way they passed a place where some cakes of ice had fallen from a load, and the horse being somewhat frightened thereat, his owner made some emphatic remarks about the carelessness of men who would thus obstruct the highway. The 6tranger thereupon reproved, him for speaking thus, telling him how shocked he was to hear auy person swear. When the residence of Mr. Irish was reached, it being too late to view the farm that evening, Ste?ens concluded to stay over niht with Mr. Irish. At the, supper table the stranger asked a blessing, and during the evening introduced the subject of religion, and being a fluent apd intelligent talker, quite interested Mr. Irisn and family. Conversation eon tinued until a late nour, ana betore retirius, Mr Irish, who is e. elder in the Presbyterian chureli 'of Pleasant Valley atid family worship each eveuin;' invited the stranger to he did with fervency prayT and eloqueuce. . He was subsequent ly shown to his room up stairs, and bade his ost a warm good ..night. lUr. Irisn slept clown stairs, and as usual both himself and his wife huug their gold watches against the wall, one each side of the door. I he tanner also huug his pantaloons, in the pocket oi which was his wallet containing about twenty dollars, in the accustomed place. On arising in the morning both the pantaloons and the watches were missing, and the host went to the room of his guest to see if ha knew anything: about them. The room was there, but the guest had departed. A search of the apartment resulted in discovering Mr. Irish's empty pocket book on the floor, and the pantaloons near it. The "religious" man had contented himself with taking the watches and money, without disturb ing anything else. There is a young lady living iu the family, who also has a gold watch, but as she had taken tha precaution to lock the e was safe. Mr, door, her Irish came to this city yesterday and took steps toward getting track or the thief, offering a reward of $200 lor his apprehension. Mr. Johnson, clerk of the Poughkeepsie hotel states that a man answering the description of Stevens, and of the same robbery name, perpetrated a in Oswego some three years ago, and was arrested and sent to the State prison, his term expiring last June. There is little doubt that this is the same man, und also the one who re cently victimized a . Westchester ' county farmer in like maner. ...
