The remarkable trial of Tiabbome, claimant to a proud estate and title, has met with an untimely bat not unexpected termination. lie not only lost his claim to one of the fairest names in the British realms, but his pretensions hare culminated in a finale that will lire as the record either of one of the Eiost stupendous frau h ever attempted, or of the perpetration of a great wrong. Tichborns was Inst week sentenced. t9 a penal term of fourteen years for the crime of perjury. This, is the end of a famous case around which was thrown all the glamour of romance and invested with an interest that for years commanded the attention of all classes privileged as well as untitled. Opinion has been much divided' in Great Britain regarding the regularity of Tichborne' 8 claim to the rich inheritance to which ho maintained lie was entitled. The higher classes resisted his pretensions and branded Lira- as an imposter, as the pliant instrument of a dastardly conspiracy. A deep current of sympathy welled from the heart' of the commonalty, who were persistent in their declaration that Tichborne was the true and rightful lord of the estate in dispute, aud that the effort to deprive him of his heritage, was the result of deep seated jealousy and prejudice, among those who shrank from the contamination of plebeian, association: The claimant undoubtedly held the vantage ground up fco the time that the . 'Certain- - developments were made, which destroyed the fabric of his hopes, which had been built upon irret'ragible-evidcnce.The testimony and facts were specioas, pausiblc, appeared to be iacoBtrovertible, aad with scarcely a semblance of a doubt that . - the result of the case would establish his right to the possessions of his ancestors. At a single blow his expectations were ruined. A was a mate or steward on board an American ship, had- testified that) he picked uf the elaimant in an open boat at sea, On this testimony the whole case hinged) and fixed his identity. It was diseovered however, that the fellow was suborned to testify to that effect, and thus restore the missing, link in the chain of testimony which was- till then irrefutable. This witness was arrested, tried and couvicted fon the crime of perjury, and Tichborne has now met with the same hapless fata. This case is perhaps the most in the annals of English jurisprudeuee; the boldest in the conception f a daring plot, and the most startling in tho influences it might have exerted iu adding com- plications to tho already embarrassed chancery system of Great Britain. . n ' man-wh- ' - 1 'i: , f i - .... y- I" l' I' . i 3f AN'S HUMANITY. It is gratifying to see that active measures are being taken to prevent the outrage which are constantly practiced on immigrants, upon their landipg in this country. New York has taken the initiative in the matter, and it is probable that the most stringent measures will be adopted to fbrbid the repetition of the abuses which are inflicted upon unwary vic tims. It is an. ind:sputablo fact that for years the emigrant has been treated on the wharves of New York, with a shameful disregajd for hospitality. They have been a prey to the vampires of that city, and could not be saved from imposition by the efforts of the municipal authorities and benevolent societies. The old and illustrious Irish Emigrant Society did its work as well as it could in these days, bat the labor proved to be too great, and mainly by its efforts was the first Board of Emigration in the United States organized and established in 1837. Since that time there have come to New York under the protection of the Commissieners about six million persons. That healthy measures should be taken to protect the emigrants seeking the hospitality and shelter of our flag, is made patent by the announcement of wrongs which are daily perpetrated upon them. Post Office. li. Ogilen City, March 2, Editor Jvxctiom : Sia: In an editorial published in the Juhction on Saturday evening, o "Cache County Mails, Again," you say the mails "were not forwarded via. the narrow-guagexeept for three days." Now, if the mails were not forwarded by that line except far three daya, where were the pouches containing the mails for Cache county the balance of that tiara ? I know, and can provo by competent witnesses, that from the 9th to Sunday the 15th of Feb. inclusive, I put up the mail for Cache, from this office, in a separate pouch, and marked it "Logan, Utah," and that the mail messenger took said pouch each morning from here and put it en the Utah Northern car, or delivered it to the person who was to take charge of it. I also know that several times after that date the Cache mail was put up in the same manner, taken by the same messenger and delivered to the same person in charge of the Utah Northern train. J. Hall, P. M. Oar information was derived from the offioers of the U. N. R. R., who are reliable gentlemen, whose statements can be depended upon. We want the mails to go by their road, and so do the people oi'the whole northern country. We are all tired of the old miserable arrange-sten- t, and are satisfied that if a proper understanding is arrived at between the U. N. R. R. Company and the postal authorities, there will be no further cause of complaint. But while mail agents, postmasters, conductors and rail road companies play at cross purposes, confenion will continue and the people will be humbugged. Gire us a change.
