VOL. .'tr On Sunday morning last the citizens of-- New Frankfort, in Saline county, Mo., were thrown into a perfect furore of excitement, by the finding of the slain body of Mr. Henry T. Schmidt, the gentlemanly postmaster at that place. He was found lyinj upon his fac in the back part of his own store, with three ugly gashes in his head, evidently caused by a natcnet at any rate, by some sharp instrument. One of 'the gashes was diagonally across the top of his head, another over his left eye, and the third on the back of his head, either of which would have caused death. There were evident signs that a struggle took place, and it is supposed by many that after Mr. Schmidt was struck over the eye, he being a man of great muscular powers, he grappled with his assailant, when some one gave him the wound on the top of the head, and as he was falling, again hit him on the back part of the head. ' It is suppi sed by many that the dastardly deed was committed early Saturday night, while arow was going on at the saloon next door, as no unusual noise was heard by any of the neighbors at any time during the night, at Schmidt's store.; Mr. Schmidt was a gentleman highly respected and admired for his noble qualities by all who knew him, and his untimely death is deplored by all. lie was a merchant, and had the post office in connection with his store.
