The proprietor gathered him self up, and h8 and the clerk closed and locked the door so quickly that the robbers were locked out before they were aware of it. They evident- y supposed they had disabled the but the clerk was unthe proprietor had reand touched, ceived a severe but not dangerous wound in the cheek. The ball had struck a bone and glanced, and came out without reaching a vital part. The robbers stormed outside tor a while, but could not get in nor intim idate the defenders of the castle. At ength they rode away, and in a day or two were pursued by a force suffi cient to take them. Ihe pursuers and pursued had one engagement, in which two of the pursuing party were hit and hurt, and no damage done to the enemy. At last accounts the sheriff's party were waiting for rein forcements, and the robbers were getting further away. They had line, fleet horses, and were armed with rifles, while the sheriff and his men lad pistols and shot guns of l'ttle use at long range.
