St. Louis, Mo. - ORGAN n Alio-Ith- is AMERICAN. New York, 20. The fact that the associated banks here have perfected an equalization of their legal tenders and other reserves, gives a cheerful tone to the situation today, and liquidations are progressing hourly. Every iiay the Stock Exchange remains closed is so much time gained. An extraordinary movement in gold began about 12 o'clock. The price had been strong all the morning. It opened at 11 1 and worked up nearly one per cent., when it was found the sales which had been made were cramping operators. Greenbacks sold for 3J premium. The clearings at the Gold Exchange at 2 p m. amounted to $25,000,-000- . Two dealers had been found delinquent, and it was feared their clearances would not be effected, but fortunately aid was given them by Dreiell, Morgan & Co., and thus a gold panic was possibly checked. After the trouble was over, shorts in gold commenced to cover. Gold loaning was flat, greenbacks were at 4 per cent, premium bid. Many ttrauge rumors were current on Wall street for the last two days concerning the causes of the Government's action in suspending the purchase of bonds. One rumor stated that Government had already paid out $24,000,000 in bond purchase; also that $20,000,000 in greenbacks were sent eut from Washington and placed in the hands of Assistant Treasurer Millhiuse. He being questioned this p. m., regarding the truth of these reports, said no such amount of.Government money had been paid, but only twelve million of 5.20 bonds were purchased. In addition to that we have redeemed during the past week, about $127,000 of legal tender certificates, issued to the banks under the act of June 8, 1872, upon deposit with the United States of our legal tenders to facilitate their clearances at the clearing house. This $12,000,000 money only has been paid. The. other twelve millions being the Millhouse also banks' own money. flatly contradicts the rumor that his currency balance has become exhausted. Also the rumor that Government could give bankers no further relief without infringing on the reserve. Money was lent at all sorts of rates. Stock Exchange people paid J per cent, and greenbacks were at a premium of 3 per cent, over certified checks in foreign exchange. San Francisco, 26. The local bankers are still pursuing a cautious policy and generally strengthening themselves for the situation. No trouble of any kind is apprehended, but it is deemed prudent to adopt a conservative course. They continue to draw exchange on New York. ' Baltimore, 2fi. , William Fisher & Sons, who are among the leading stock and gold brokers of this city, have closed their doors. They say they have been forced, by the delinquencies of customers, to suspend business until they can collect what is due. Chicago, 2G. It is just announced that the Union National, Second National, and Manufacturer's National Banks have suspended. A notice on the door of the former says the bank has abundant secureties, but is compelled to suspend payments, on account of lack of currency, until it is able to realize. Nothing has been lost from failures, and depositors will be made safe. The Cook County, City National, and National Bank of Commerce, have followed the example of the Union National, and closed their doors. There was a run for an hour on the Cern Exchange Bank, but as everything was paid the run soon stopped. Some who drew have redeposited. The bank is considered very strong. Other National Banks are paying regularly. There is considerable excitement among business men and the grain trade shows the effect of it. President of the Union National, is severely censured by other, bankers and the whole of the community, for taking an extreme course whelly unnecessary. It is suggested that there must be something rotten in this bank, though it has been regarded as very strong. The city banks are all keeping open doors and doing business as usual. It is not learned that any of the savings banks have suspended. The officers of the National Bank of Commerce. say they have only closed for the day, and that it will depend on the condition of affairs whether they will open or not. The rumor of a rua.on the National Cora Exchange turns out untrue. The deposits in that bank have exceeded all withdrawals $40,000, and the bank is prepared te pay every . demSnd. i v . St Louis, 2G.I The prize fight between Tom Allen and Mike McCoole took place this aftermiles above noon at a point forty-fiv- e here and was witnessed by a crowd of 2,000 persons who went up in a steamer which conveyed the contestants to the ground. The fight was brief, fierce and bloody, Allen winning in seven rounds, fought in twenty minutes, and getting first blood in the first round, and the first knock down in the fourth. McCoole was terribly battered; his face at the end of the battle being swollen to a bloody mass of flesh and both eyes closed, while Allen escaped with scarcely a scratch, nis antagonist never having succeeded in touching his face.- - - Arthur Chambers and Pa'.sey Shepherd were Allen's saconds, Tom Kelly and Dublin Tricks, McCoole's. The following is a description of the last round : McCoole presented a horrible appearance and seemed scarcely able to hold his bands.his left eye was closed and he had a terrible cut under the right eye. The right side of the upper lip was cut and his nose broken. . Before he toed the mark Allen said, "It is a shame to send that man up to be punished ; if you don't take him away, I'll disfigure him for life; he is the gamest man I ever met." The crowd !
