The desire to earn a sustenance as easily as possible, and the numerous .opportunities for speculation, induce many to enter a life which is beset with temptation'. There is a class who, having once tasted the sweets of power, are loth to i relinquish it. They prefer the haz ardous, precarious career of politics to one that might make them useful members of society, instead of depending upon the popular breeze, which is ever uncertain. Many a mau who is vegetating in some office, received as a gift for political ser vices, has destroyed his usefulness by abandoning an honorable avoca tion, to embark on the stormy sea of polities'. No issuo of national importance w ill be decided by the elections next month, in Ohio, Indiana and Iowa. But the result will exercise an influence of great moment upon the policy of the Government, and materially affect the situation in the great States of Pennsylvania and New York, where elections occur in November following. Opposition to the exactions of rich corporations, and resistance to Wndpoly are subjects that engross the attention ot the people. Both parties are pretty much in accord in those States on these questions, although the democratic party is more pronounced and emphatic in its declarations. The subject' of finances necessarily affords a theme of absorbing iuterest. They see with uneasiness the tendency of contracting the currency at a time that expansion is indispensable. ,Their vaults have to been repeeatedly depleted in the indebtedness their liquidate Eastern markets ; and just now the draining process has commenced to fill the gap made by the suspensions in New York. That section was never reconciled to the eccentric course pursued by the Government in administering the finances of the nation, and the events of the last few days will awaken a feeling of distrust in the minds of dispassionate thinkers.
