' "' " R Mrs. Louise Palmer Weber of Portland, Ore., who is nationally known as an expert on foods and their preparation, will open a series of lectures in Ogden tomorrow afternoon, speaking at the Orpheum theatre, immediately after the Pantages matinee. Preston, forest Inspector of the western division of forest management with headquarters at Washington, arrived this morning from a trlD of inspection to the Wyoming forest where the Standard .Timber company is engaged in cutting ties on a contract with the forest service that has five more years to run. " He was accompanied on the inspection trip by R. H.- - Itutledge. district forester, C. B. Morse, assistant district forester, and. Supervisor Charles A. Beam. Forest Inspector Preston will leave 'tonight, accompanied by Assistant District Forester Morse and Forest Examiner S. S. Stewart, for a trip to southern" Utah where he will look over the territory containing timber infested with the Black Hills bark beetle.' CUITIXG MANY TIES. Timber company is at present cutting between 300.000 and 400,000 ties per year, one of the largest tie operations in the western country.' The ties are banked on the Cottonwood stream and driven down the stream in the spring during high water and down the Green river during low water to Green River, Wyo., where they ard loaded on the railroad. The ties are being cut for the Union Pa cific railroad system. There are in the neighborhood of 100 men engaged in cutting the ties, each man working on a contract that takes in a strip of tlmbr. Up until Oct. 1 at which time a new wage scale went into effect the choppers were earning between $8 and $10 per day. FORKST MEN ON JOB. The' forest service has three men employed In the forest who mark the timber to be cut, keep account of the number of ties cut and see that the brush is properly disposed of and that the various contracts are lived up to. A large portion of the timber la left standing that is suitable for flawed ties, the ties being cut at present are hewed ties, the chopper making the tie complete.
