The Mail "barks up the wrong tree," in opening its little mouth against the Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee. The Mail assumes too much. It assumes to know who wrote a recent article in the Junction on the Mail's poor soft soap, and to know a great deal about the "Mormon" Church. It is equally incorrect in both of its assumptions. Instead of answering the Jt'jic TION with argument, the Mail pours stream of small out a wishy-wash- y advice to "the wrong man," and makes a feeble attempt to show that the ''Mormon" people dare not "peep of Democracy or Republicanism," etc. The proof offered is that the peoph aro visited on the eve fif an election by persons who "impress" upon them their duty to vote for a certain ticket. This is "coercion'' We acknowledge the terrible tyranny, but claim that it is practiced by both Democrats and Republicans, who use all the influence at their command to induce others to role their ticket, and no Liberals of Utah other. Thd do more. They not only use all the tacties in election matters which they complain of in men of influence among tho "Mormons," but they blackguard and seek to injure who do not choose to join in with their schemes and endorse their platform or their ticket. Last night, between eight and nine o'clock, a complaint was wade, before Justioe Middlemen by Joseph Blimau, against one L. R. Freeman, wbo, for tbe past few mom lis. has resiled io this city. The complainant was in a teriihle plight, bleeding profusely from several wounds in the head. A warrant was maje out and placed in the hands of Sheriff Brown, who arrested the defendant about nine o'clock, at bis place on Wull Street. Freeman pretended be was too sick to be removed, but Dr. J. J. Murphy, when called in, id not coincide with this statement, deciding that there was nothing the matter with Freeman but an attack of nervo'isnefS. lie was accordingly locked up for the uiglit in the city j iil, uo one beiug found wuo was willing io risk anything en his bail. It appsars that Freeman, who, we are artold, publishes a "patent-outridein this he which tries rangement city, to dignify by the name of newspaper, engaged Biimanas traveling agent; that the accounts between them were Dot satisfactory to the former, and tbe trouble grew out of this disagreement. According to the statement made to us by Bliman, he was urgently requested yesterday by Freeman to go to tbe latter's office on Wull street, to talk business. Accordingly be went to tbe office, between seven and eight o'clock last evening and explained some matters of difference between them. Bliman, who is a very small man, was sitting in a chair, smoking, with a cane lying across his lap. Freeman, who is tall, and weighs a third heavier than Bliman, and wbo meanwhile had locked the door, seized this cane and dealt Bliman a terrible blow with the loaded end, just above the temple, following it up with repeated blows on the top, side and back of tbe bead. Bliman staggered, bleeding, to one of the cases and leaned over it, insensible. He was "brought to" by water thrown over his faceby Mrs. Freeman, who led him into the back room and told him he had better eajape by the bick way. lie get cut of the house, but was overtaken by Freeman and forced back into the room, when Freeman seized him by the threat and demanded his watch. He bad none, but Mrs. Freeman obtained possession of his pocket-book- , examined it, aud findno in returned it. He was it, money ing thea allowed to depart, Freeman, who began to see the consequences of bis brutality, trjing to "square it" with him on conlitiombat he would not com. plain against him. Dr. Murphy dressed Mr. Bliman'a wounds last night and again this morning, nad had considerable difficulty in checkiag the flow of blooJ. Sheriff Brown tays there was quite a pool of blood iu Freeman's office, and blood stains were in the back room when he made the arrest. Tbe caue has beeu hid den and cannot be found. The case was sot before Justice to day at 2 p.m. Mr. Wilkiuson, of Chicago, deposed to hearing Freeman requesting Bliman to come to his office in tbe evening "or he would have a head put on bnu," and to seeing Bliman after "the head whs put on him." wlien he looked like a "stuck pig." The cae was continued by request of defendan'ts attorney, Mr. at 9 a.m. Bail Margary, till was fixed at $200. Great indignation is excited in town over this deliberate, cowardly and brutal assault, the difference in the physical powers of the two rovn inakiug the attack most dastardly and shameful. Whatever Blitnan'a faults may be, this was no proper way f correcting them or punishing him, and the whole community cry shame ou the cowardly reflian w ho committed the crime, and call loudly lor justice upon his head " . loaded-heade- Young jffan Killed.
