"' The City Council met in tbe City Hall, Oct. 13th, 1873, at 2.30 p. m., Alderman Walter Thomson in the chair. A number of petitions for licenses were presented and granted. The special committee, appointed at a previous meeting to make inquiries in regard to the obtaining of suitable grounds for the Utah Northern railroad depot, reported that they had continual cated with Prest. Young on the subject, and had received a letter from him staling that the Utah Northern Company was at liberty to use as muoh of tbe land alluded to as would be required for rail road purposes. The report was accept ed and the committee discharged. The committee appointed to adjust the matter of excess of land on the east and west sides of Main street, reported that they had received from Mr. Fox, Terri torial Surveyor, a letter containing his views on the subject. He stated that it was lawful in all such cases for the owners of the lots to be allowed the overplus. After taking into consideration the many complications and difficulties that would arise by dividing the surplus into fractional parts, the Council decld ed that the excess of 6 ft. 2 inches on the west side of Main street, on the burnt down district, be sold by auction, and that the proceeds, after paying ex penses incurred, be divided among the original owners, viz : those who filed on the lots. Several tradesmen's and other bills were presented aad allowed. The Counoil adjourned till the 27th of October, 1873, to meet in the City Hal at 2 p. m. j . Explosion of 'a Soda Water : Ilottle. Ofi Tuesday afternoon a frightful accident occurred at Ileimrod'a branch soda water uianufactury on Ninth street, near the comer of Howard, superintended by John Richard. William Segelke, an employe, had in his hands, a charged soda water bottle, and while he was attempting to put a label upon it,' it exploded, probably owing to a too great pressure. The bottle was broken into a hundred pieces, and sent flying to ' every part of the room. Some of the pieces struck Segelke in the face and eyes, cutting him quite badly, and injuring his eyes so severely that it was at first thought that he would loose his sight. Dr. Peck was immediately called, and had him placed in a darkened room, and made preparations at once to save his eyes if possible. This morning Segelke was much better, and Dr. Peck gives it as his opinion that he will be able to prevent any serious damage to hi3 eyes. Omaha Bee. ATHAIM .
