Editor of the Chronicle : Sir The Altu of the 5th inst. casts a reflection on a correspondent of the Chronicle for certain statements made in reference to Capt. Ben Wright's treat-meof the Modocs in 1802. The state ment in the Chronicle of 1873 referred to I pave its cor is substantially correct.respondent the items; he wrote the state ment. He having been attacked for an untruthful report, I have determined to make as close a statement as the nature of the case will admit.. Capt. Ben Wright, in the fall of 1852, sent to Yrcka for strychnine, with which to poison the Modocs, who had been invited to his camp to treat for peace. A portion of the poison was supplied by the house in which 1 was then a partner in. We gave all the strychnine we had. A gentleman now living in San Francisco (Captain Win. Clarkson) assisted my partner in obtaining un additianal quan tity, that which we contributed not beiug deemed sufficient. Swill, the Oregon ' Indian, did object to this mode of war his nnd fare, objection frustrated the at to tempt poison the Modoc re ace Commission. The Modocs were afterwards invited into camp to treat for peace, and Wright and his troops did assault and kill yearly all of them. This information I had from Wright Liuiself, and it was the talk of the men generally to his command on their entrance into Yreka after the close of their campaign. The citizens feasted and entertained them at the principal hall in the city and commended them for their acts. Wright's troops brougM into the city and displayed upon their persons the scalps of the Modoc Peace Commissioners; and the above element will be denied 1 think by no resident of the city of Yreka in 1852. Gen. Coltcn, I nm satisfied, is aware of the above facts. Wm. Burgess, a resident of the State of Nevada, but at present in this city, is aware of them; Col. Charles Drew, late of the Federal army aul at present in San Francisco, will admit the main points. Capt. Wm. Clarkson, as before aud will state mentioned, s here that he assisted in procu.int the strychnine under Benjamin Wright' orders ; Dr. W. D. Aylett is certainly aware of the facts set forth. All the eitlzens of Yreka in the fall of 1852 are aware of the main points in this statement, and a close investigation will reveal the names of the parties who contributed three head of cattle, upon which the poison was to be sprinkled for the Modoc feast.
