Show Rescue of Life by Swimming. D.W.PARKHURST'S ftltf (Djdeu function. PubIlliol every WEDNESDAY ad SATURDAY by the Uqdis Pubusuwo Comvant. Correspondence. Iboh Citt, July, 27th, 1870. Joseph Hall, Esq: Dear Sir: You ask what is the news, how natural that question is to a local! In Southern Utah our projects hate never been ao promising, crops will fill the expectation of all. Health of the 'people good. The quartz mills in Meadow Valley and Dry Valley, art paying instituions, J. Morgan of Little Cottonwood Never m enemy," my old General Sara. Houston, often bad occasian to remark I to hit hot headed boys during the long straggle of the Texians for their indeIt is a good motto to observe pendence through life in all things where there is a- man 01 men to contend against men or means. What I state I know of Meadow Valley, and further that Southern Utah is a rich mineral land, abounding in fields of the finest iron ores in the known world ! while her copper and xinc, leads or lode, defy competition in any part of the Union, that her ailver lodes, or leads, are good, I doubt not. But that the masses can, or ever will find it to their interest to turn miners I do not for a moment believe ; my own experience for two years, convinces me to the contrary. I have learned from the history of nations that the people who have directed their miningabilitics to the develope-nieof their iron, xinc, copper, and tin deposits, have out stripped in individual and national wealth those countries who neglected them, and gave their time and talent up alone to the working of the precious metals. I believe that the true interest of the American nation, is to adhere to that line of political economy that has enriched other nation, and is doing so much for her citixens to day. It has been said that the Union Iron Company's object was not to work the iron but the silver ores of this district. Those assertions were without foundation, and I considered that they came from a source the fountain of which is deeply steeped with the gall of envy. That the company may be forced to erect a quarts mill to effect their original design, I cannot say, but should ibey do so, it will be when they are more fully convinced than at present that the iron Interest lucks a godfather. The company are now incorporated with a $10(1,000 stock, paid in as the law requires, and we purpose to as surely see the iron business of Utah placed on an independent footing, aa we were once to see the "Lone Star" wave triumphantly over the graves of the Montetumas. We have seen the one; we shall sea the other. And it is with pleasure that we receive and read the letters of friends at home, and from that city of nations, Chicago, encouraging us to push the greatest in the west onward. From none nave we more enoou;ni tun from the enterprising company of Ely and lUvmond of Meadow Valley, and the California Company at Dry mlley. Our works once in mining trim, and we can supply the eastings for the quarts mills of Utah and Eastern Nevada, and furnish the iron for the Utah Central. Among the honorablcs whom we learn feel an interest in the iron business of Utah, is our worthy Governor, who, we understand, through Col. Dame, proposes to visit us before the sitting of the next legislature. Glad to hear it, Governor; you shall have a welcome as broad as the folds of the flag of the Union. Bring with you a few of the te - M. Farrand, a member of the Board of Health of the city of Lyons, France, says: "The method which has most interested me is that performed by an Englishman named Hodgson, of Sunderland; and after having experimented on and developed it, I recommend it for its precision and efficacy. It consists in holding the drowning man by the hair, and turning him on bis back. Then the salvor turns over rapidly with his face upward, places the head of the man on his breast, and thus swims to land. This method is so simple and easy that in an experiment which I had the pleasure of making this autumn with my friend Dr. Bron, 1 was able with ease to practice simultaneously the rescue of two persons more or less motionless. One of them did not know how to gwim, and that was a great difficulty, for he grew stiff with fear, lost the floating line, so important to aid us in advancing, and tyindorcd me considerably by lying along my side like an immovable oar on the side of a boat." nt one-fourt- ll Malad City, July Editor Junction: M.
