Saturday Morning, July 9, 1870. To All Whom it Hay Con- cern. of ucftt'i excass and money' scarcity, anything that will gave labor is a doublo blessing. Who that has toiloJ from early morn till dusky cte Ia these times in the sultry harvest field, swinging the cradle through the heavy grain, but has r or steam-powefelt that was the proper instead of force for such labor? And who that has raised a crop, having to pay a high price for hands and to sell grain at a low price to merchants, but has felt that something must bo dono to reduce the cost of produce ! Tlio true policy for farmers is to use all the machinery they cun, in every branch of their vocation, and thus save personal toil and the price of much manual labor. A great deal of machinery has been- imported into Utah, but our farmers are not half supplied. Ifihey wish to Compete successfully with eastern markets, they will have to adopt eastern tactics. The hoe will have to give place to the Cultivator, the hinJ rake to tbo Sulky, the scythe and the cradle to tho Mower and Reaper, the flail and the tramping floor to the Thresher and Separator. Tho cost of theso machines miy startle them at first, but they will find that they are money-savin- g as well as labor-savinThe first contrivances. cost is tho only real cost; for w'.th proper care and attention while being used, and decent protection w hen luid away, the cost of repairs will bo but slight, and they will last a very long time; and while they last they save hired labor, which is equivalent to saving horse-powe- r, man-powe- r, - money. Zion's Mercantilo Institution have, this present season, imported a tariety of agricultural machines of the most approved patterns. They have accepted none but those, which, through practical trial last year, can bo conscientiously recommcuded to tho people. TUey offer them at factory prices (not merchant's prices) with freight added, and give the purchaser the benefit obtained by special car - load rates of freightage; getting all their profit from tho manufacturer instead of the customer. This is very liberal and ought to be appreciated by tho farmers of Utah. The patterns imported may bo ascertained by reference to our advertising columns. A competent practical machinist is in readiness at the warehouse, who will too that everything is as it should be, and deliver every machine iu perfect running order. Any enquiries by letter will be replied to immediately. Now is the time for our friends in tho north, who will reap a pretty good harvest in spile of grasshoppers and crickets, to secure these warranted, agricul- tural machines aud have them "all set," well greased and ready for work. Whilo wo are on this subject, wo will ak our Ogden dealers In wagons, why it is that Schuttlor wagons can bo purchased at the Z. C. M. I. in Salt Lako City $;" cheaper than anywhere in Ogd'n! Is this so? Will somebody pleaso enlighten us, for the publio benefit? Ogden can, and ought to, sell as cheap ns Salt Lake, and there is no doubt that in many things Ogdon prices are lower than those of the metropolis. Wo are glad to see good machines, good wagons, and good and useful implements of various kinds coming into the Territory; and we hope to seo the time when every practical farmer in Utah will avail himself of tho modern labor-savininventions, get out of tho o old stylo of business, and march up to the music and spirit of the times. g Correspondence. Pacific Railroad Company. General Aqfnt's Ofhck, TJnios Oodin, Utah, July, 6, 1870. Oudik Junction : Editor Dear Sir: By request of our General Passenger Agent, will you please notice in your next issue, that on and after 8th inst., First Class Tickets, good for thirty days, will be on sale at our Ticket Office here, for excursion parties of ten persons and upwards, for tho round trip, from Ogden to Omaha and return, at $108,00, each person. This low rate is given to cnablo the people of this iuterior country, to visit their friends in the States. Connecting lines east of Omaha, will probably make suitable reductions to all such parties. Letters of inquiry should be addressed to T. W. Cook, General Agent, U. P. R. R., Ogden Utah. jt2T If you want Three The Fourth or July. Item. We copy tho following by request from tho columns of tho Salt Lake Herald. The North. A woll known gentleman in from the northern portion of the Territory, courteously furnishes us the following items : The hoppers are coming and going in Cache Co., and are doing considerable dauingo to the crops which were looking fine. Bishop P. Maughan, who has always been a steady friend to the Indians, was expecting the Bannacks in force, and was borrowing flour, &c, to feed them during their stay. Oilier Indians had been in the country for days, living off the hospitalities of the people, who for four years past have suffered much from the ravages of the grasshoppers. The good people of the Territory are paying out hundreds of thousands to "Poor Lo" in freo will tho counsel of following offerings, President Young, who always says it is cheape: to feed than to fight them, and that hsmauity and justice command us lo show them kindness. Mail irregularities and blunders are complained of all over the Territory. In l&ct, from the northern part of Arizona to the southern part of Idaho I have heard hundreds of complaints. Petitions and consequent removal would remedy this trying evil in any other state or territory, but there seems to be no show for the "Mormons." "Mormon'' post masters who have served the community and the government without fault for years, are, in certain locali ties, to bo removed and their places filled by men of problematical character. With all duo respect for those concerned in Weber county, I will intimate that no country in tho territory not has as good a even volcanic Dixie show for bad roads, more boulders to run over, narrower and heavier graded dugways, more abrupt water ditches to ascend and descend, than in tho same number of miles in Weber county. Even its graded streets are covered with largo cobbles. This has always been tho condition of Weber county roads. The traveler heartily wishes for improvement. Our correspondent in conclusion, says "Ogden Junction, please copy." Our Weber coun'y neighbors are spirited and will without doubt fix up and make tho roads all that tho most exacting traveler could require." Wo regret very much to learn of the damage dono by tho hoppers to the crops in Cache Valley. Before the unwelcome guests paid this visit, tho peo-plof Cache county were rejoicing over the prospect of the most bountiful harvest they had ever re ipod. Wo have no doubt that sufficient will bo loft them for torea'l mutt anil u UiUu to spare for tho devourcrs at this seaso i on'y make temporary calls, and when tbey have lunched ami put up a littlo for their journey they will pass on. As to mail irregularities and blunders they nro nearly as common as grasshoppers, and just as much of a nuisance, and it is to be devoutly hoped that the inefficient or malicious persons who are permitted in the providence of God to annoy us for a season, for our sins, will, like the hoppers in Cache Valley, only make a temporary sojourn here. In regard to tho roads in Wcbor County, they are undeniably bad. Wo know of some others that are bad too. But the black kettle is n t made whiter by calling tho pot smutty, so we will not o try to whitewash Weber County by sounding the depth of the mud in other counties. However there aro two sides to every question, and something may be said on tho other side of the road subject. By rcferenco to tho Road Supervisor's report, cotitainod in the municipal balance sheet, published in the J r xenon of 2nd inst., it will bo seen that Ogden City has expended on tho roads during tho last year and a half, the nice l ttlo sum of $4,393,67. This is not to be sneezed at as the effort of tho peoplo of ono city to "mend their ways." There aro localities as well as people which aro softer than others, and it takes a great deal, very often applied, to harden them. Ogden is a soft place, and the country north partakes of its nature. Wo hope by a continuation of the good work which figures (and figures aro facts) show to have been attempted, that the mads in this county will soon be brought up, at least to the standard of other counties. There are many optningt for improvement in other spots that we wot of. We remember "stalling" with an empty wagon once in an unpropitious season in the Main street of Eaysville, and if assistance had not been rendered by some humane persons we might now be in China, far away from tho bosora of our family and the palatial sanctum of the Junction. We tope tho strictures of tho writer in the Herald, who, if not a "knight of the road" is, wo believe, a gentleman prtty well acquainted with every high way in tho Territory, will have duo effect on tho Supervisors cf Weber County, for its roads are certainly no better than they should be, and repairs and alterations are absolutely necessary to public safety and convenience.
