In 1831, a conference was held in the place where the church was organized; and in, answer to the enquiry of the people, as to the will of the Lord, He gave them a commandment to go to work with all their might, and labor with their hands to gather the Saints to Ohio. Suppose the people had refused to comply with this commanduieHt bcocause it was in regard to physical labor, would the love of God have been in their hearts? If .any refused to hearken to that law I will venture to say they are not in the church This commandment Was not in the Bible, but God requires us to obey what he reveals to us now. The people in Kirtland were required to build a temple, and to make everything according to tire pattern. Would the Lord have been satisfied if they had hired a building instead of obeying the commandment T No! But because tho people obeyed" his word, he revealed himself to them; sent. Elijah the prophet, who brought certain keys referred to by the Prophet Malachi, reliting to baptism for the dead, by which the hearts of the fathers were turned to. their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers. Other angels appeared, and committed kevs, conferring power to build up the Kiugdom of God. On my right and'leftare men who have received these keys; and they will never betaken from them while the earth shall stand. The Lord requires us to obey every commandment to the letter; this is the only way tve can manifest our love to him. Many suppose that because of the increase of knowledge in literature, science and art, that thereby they can find out God, ami the things of God, but no man can ever understand them on this principle. A great many developments have been made during the Inst half century, about matters which before were unknown, sncb as steam power, electric agencies, gas and hiniinoia"0!ls, photography, machinery for manufacturing purposes, etc.,' and because of the discoveries which have been made, men have supposed that they could grasp all intelligence, and by their own wisdom comprehend eternal things. They forget that, with all the expansion of the human mind, that they are in the dark about God. There is a wide differeuoe between earthly and heavenly things. The philosophy of the earth cannot enter into the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. Man can comprehend a few of tho secrets of nature, but who can find out the purposes of nature's God? By the science of astronomy we know something of the motions of the planets, but who comprehends the power by which they are set in motion and governed and controlled . Who can draw aside the curtain that hides futurity, and unravel the mystery of the immortality of men? Some men believe that in a older times men were in - a rous condition, and that any kind of re ligion was good enough for them; but now when men are more enlightened and civilized, a corresponding advance is necessary in religion. But tho Bible tells me, "known unto God are all his works from the beginning unto the end." All the laws which govern nature which have been: lately discovered, always existed, man could not originate one of them. So with the gospel, it existed before the world was mede, but God it as it pleases him. Legislators will undertake to tell me what i shall believe and what I shall not believe, as though they had found out the mind of God. Oh, fools! and the great dimcul-tis they dont know they, are .fools, We are indobted to the revelation of God for our, knowledge of, the-veprinciple of the Gospel. When tho Gos-pwas revealed to us, we were, ehpwn how to obtain a knowledge of its truths for ourselves. That knowledge we have rcoeived ; we know that once we were blind, but now we can see, and no one can talk away, or legislate away the light and knowledge . we;,have received. The spirit which has brought this knowl The spirit edge we have received. which has brought this, knowledge does not lead us to set up the, human intellect as superior to the decree of Jehovah, but to bow in humble submission to bis commandments. If others ' know nothing about eternal things, we do, for God has taught us, and having been instruct ed in the way that leads to exaltation and eternal lives, we intend to walk therein despite the hostility of wickedness and corupt men. We fear not man who can kill tho body, and then do no more, but we fear God and him only. We know that this is bis work, and that it will roll on, that Zion' will rise and shine, and the glory cf God will be manifest among his Saints. May God bless you, aud the wrath of God be upon the enemies of his people, from this tiwo " forth and fore.ver. Amen! "Elder GedTT. We received a commandment many years ago, to gather out from the world, and to stand in holy places preparatory We to the coming of the Son of Man. differ from the infidel world with regard to our practice, and our language ; we do not take the name of the Deity in vain. We are not in the habit of gambling ; we are not in the habit of getting drunk nor of lying or deceiving. But wo are too lavish of speaking evil of our neighbors in many instances. To me it manifests a great weakness to follow a fashion that is uncomely, unhealthy, and inconvenient.. We are too apt, in this respect, to follow the foolish fashions of tbe world. Ladies do you wear a bonnet that would screen your face from the No. sun, or turn a shower of rain You follow the foolish fashion of this wicked world. This is vain and foolish and does not manifest the spirit of a Saillt. You will see in the; works of God a great variety; therefore we do not ask either the ladies or gentlemen to follow one particular fashion.-'- A few years ago ladies wanted about sixteen yards of material for a dress, so as to have two or three yards trailing on the ground; now they have about hve yards, and look as though they ought to keep stooping to pull their dresses down. I ask the sisters to make their own bonnets and dresses, and to have them useful and decent; but do not run after the fashions of the world. They that have in their hearts the love of the world have not the love of God. What is the use of all the trimming which the ladies wear on their dresses? If we buy our families things which are useless, we take so much from the Church for the gathering of the poor, tho spreading of the gospel, and the building up of the Kingdom of God. It is rather discouraging when we seo those whom we bring from the old countries, and put into a position lo live, lift their heels against God and his anointed. Still it is better to bring them here, if great numbers of them turn away from the truth, than to leave any honest souls to perish in the world. Why do we not keep the word of wisdom? I am happy to say we are improving. But there are some who feel they must have their tea, and must have their liquor; they feel as though they'd die without it, and I say they'll die with it. It is very pleasing to see the efforts toward home manufactures in many places through the Territory. But we wish to see it become more extensive. In the providences of God, we are forced into many things which are very advantageous. We are building factories south, and preparing for more north. The wool is on hand, and I hope soon to see all my brethren wearing home-spuAs regards fashion, I am the fashion as far as I myself am concerned, asking no odds of any one. The fashions of the world go to extremes, and, oh, how foolish they are. Yery interesting and Instructive addresses were also delivered by Elder W. Woodruff and Prest. Geo. A. Smith. 1 : ! n.
